But for the vast majority of contestants, appearing on a reality TV show was anything but a dream. Just ask Bachelor in Paradise star Jamie Doran. The firefighter has filed a lawsuit with Warner Bros, the production company behind The Bachelor franchise, claiming he was “set up” to appear “clingy” and “emotionally unstable” during filming and that there were red flags on set.The former fireman told Confidential his grievances go beyond his “villain edit” on the now axed Channel 10 show and include claims of bullying and lack of duty of care. He‘s due to appear in court this week.

However, he’s not the only disgruntled reality television star in the country. There are many others who have complained about their portrayal on TV and since their appearance, stepped away from the spotlight. DAVINA RANKINPerhaps the original Married At First Sight villain, Rankin told The Kyle and Jackie O show that while filming the show, she was “coached” and encouraged by producers into an affair with fellow contestant Dean Wells. Only to learn that when these episodes aired in 2018, this plot line turned her into the most hated woman in Australia. “There were billboards of me in my wedding dress in Brisbane (next to the words), ‘Australia‘s most hated woman’,” she said.

BILL GOLDSMITHThe Bachelor in Paradise alumni took to social media, sharing footage of himself having a mental breakdown in response to his “bad boy” portrayal on the dating show. “From the outside people think that it‘s so fantastic going on TV and getting all this new-found attention, but truth be told I’m not the only one that’s struggled mentally from doing reality TV,” he wrote.

VANESSA SIERRA Love Island made her famous, but it came with a cost. In April 2020, the model told The Daily Telegraph she was admitted to hospital after a suicide attempt. She said the Channel 9 reality show ignored incidents that occurred during filming last year and, when she complained to the production team about feeling uncomfortable, she was removed from the Fijian villa. Sierra is currently dating tennis player Bernard Tomic and has been making headlines recently after complaining about hotel quarantine during the Australian Open.

NICOLE PRINCEThe former House Rules contestant won a landmark compensation case after claiming she’d be portrayed as a bully on the Channel 7 home renovation show. Prince said she and her teammate, Fiona Taylor, had been instructed to be overtly critical of their competitors during filming of the home makeover show which then saw them harassed and bullied by other contestants.

LAUREN HUNTRISSThe 2019 Married At First Sight bride spoke about her portrayal on the show, and how she was forced to say she was “a lesbian” during filming, even though she didn’t feel comfortable. Huntriss, who was matched with Matthew Bennett, said“[But] when you’re sleep-deprived, you’re under all this pressure, you’ve got two cameramen there, your producer – and, of course, you all saw what Matt was like, he never really stood up for me. “So it was like all of these men against me. They will literally say to you, ‘We’ll keep you here all day until you say what we want you to say’.”

CIARRAN STOTT He wooed Angie Kent, and Australian audiences, when he appeared on The Bachelorette in 2019 but Stott fell out of favour with the public after his appearance on Bachelor in Paradise in 2020. The Englishman’s treatment of his ex Renee Barrett, as well as Paradise flings Abbie Chatfield and Jessica Brody on the show caused controversy. Now, Stott has vowed to never again go near the franchise, telling his Instagram followers, “Not a f*cking chance. Never again. Noooo!”
