Museum locates missing Brett Whiteley artwork, 46 years after its disappearance

An ink drawing by renowned Australian artist Brett Whiteley that had not been seen for almost half a century has been rediscovered by a museum in Tasmania.

The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston informed police two years ago that the Whiteley Waves V artwork it bought in 1976 had gone missing.

The artwork had never been displayed and there was no other record of it, other than the initial purchase and it entering the gallery’s collection.

Today, after years of investigations into its disappearance, the gallery has announced it has found the work during an audit of its collection.

More to come.
