How to Customize Windows 11 Using the Registry Editor and Switch Back to Older Start Menu

A preview build of Windows 11 was leaked online last week, and it allowed us to look at some of the new features that Microsoft will be introducing with this new generation of Windows. The new Windows will feature some design changes that are coming to the Start menu, taskbar, and other corners of the OS.

If you tried to explore Windows 11 but don’t really like the new design and want to tweak it around, here’s how to try some regedits to switch between the old and new design.

Customize Windows 11 Start menu

If you don’t like the centered Start menu, you can revert to the classic Windows 10 look. Here’s how to easily do that:

1. Open Registry Editor.
2. You will be asked Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? Click Yes.
3. Create a DWORD 32-bit value named “Start_ShowClassicMode” under the following path:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced “Start_ShowClassicMode”
4. This will create a DWORD with the following settings:
   1. 0 = Use the new Windows 11 Start Menu
   2. 1 = Enable Windows 10 ‘Classic’ Start Menu

Customize Windows 11 taskbar

Windows 11 comes with a centered taskbar, which has proven to be the most polarizing design change so far. If you don’t like this and prefer the Windows 10 left-aligned icons, you can use the registry editor to customize according to your preference.

1. Open Registry Editor.
2. You will be asked Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? Click Yes.
3. Paste the following path in the bar at the top of the window:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoft WindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced “TaskbarAl”
4. This will create a DWORD-32 bit value named TaskbarAI:
   1. 0 = Left
   2. 1 = Center

You can also customize the taskbar size. Here’s how:

1. Open Registry Editor.
2. You will be asked Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? Click Yes.
3. Paste the following path in the bar at the top of the window:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoft WindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced “TaskbarSi”
4. This DWORD has the following settings:
   1. 0 = Small
   2. 1 = Medium
   3. 2 = Large

1. Open Registry Editor.
2. You will be asked do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? Click Yes.
3. Paste the following path in the bar at the top of the window:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced “EnableSnapAssistFlyout”
4. Possible value settings are:
   1. 0 = Disable
   2. 1 = Enable
