Girl group keeps The Voice on top of ratings

SA’s G Nation landed in Team Rita who now faces the tough gig of mentoring a girl group to success in Australia. Not only did the six teens smash their audition and help keep 1.7 million viewers around the country watching but they inspired plenty of repeat views on YouTube where they had 50,000 streams of their performance of the 5SOS single Teeth. The other standout performer for the night – and quadruple chair turner – was 18-year-old cafe worker Arlo Sim.He performed My Mind by American Grammy-winning gospel soul singer Yebba, the song which brought her to the attention of future collaborators Ed Sheeran and Mark Ronson.Sim’s confident and emotional performance of the mental health anthem propelled the song into the top 10 of the Australian iTunes charts for the first time since its release in 2017 and scored more than 40,000 repeat views on YouTube in the 12 hours after the show.Another Voice performance which is influencing the chart fortunes of a major international artist was 21-year-old Lau Abend’s rendition of Canadian pop star Tate Macrae’s You Broke Me First, which also leapt up the iTunes charts during Sunday’s show. Either the producers of the successful Seven reboot of the format are canny sleuths or the aspiring artists all have some connection to the coaches in this year’s season. There were a couple of tenuous links revealed on Sunday’s show with 45-year-old Bec Caruana – whose nascent pop career stalled in her 20s after two top 40 hits – sharing she was in the audience when Jessica Mauboy auditioned for Australian Idol 15 years ago.He didn’t turn any chairs but Aaron Lee revealed a Guy Sebastian T-shirt from the superstar’s early ‘fro era but inspired a competition to see which coach could sustain the longest note from Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On. And on. And on.The Voice has maintained its spot as the No. 1 entertainment show since its 10th series kicked off two weeks ago with 1.17 metro viewers on Sunday, while Nine’s The Block achieved its highest ratings for the year thanks to a bathroom reveal with 779,000 viewers and Survivor with a solid 691,000 viewers.
