Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was released on September 3 and will be exclusive to theaters for at least 45 days. Marvel has confirmed that “Shang-Chi” will debut on Disney Plus on November 12 as a part of “Disney Plus Day,” a celebration marking the second anniversary of the streaming service’s launch.

It’s not yet clear whether “Shang-Chi” will make its streaming debut exclusively on Disney Plus or if other video-on-demand (VOD) services will offer rentals or purchases first. The delayed streaming release for “Shang-Chi” is a reversal from Disney’s approach with “Black Widow,” which hit Disney Plus Premier Access the same day it arrived in theaters. “Black Widow” is already available on other VOD services, which suggests “Shang-Chi” could launch on VOD platforms before Disney Plus.

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” stars Simu Liu as a new Marvel hero who is the heir to an international organization of assassins. The film continues phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following the events of “Avengers: Endgame.” “Shang-Chi” features cameos from prior Marvel characters, like Abomination from “The Incredible Hulk.”

Liu plays the first Asian protagonist in a Marvel film and leads a cast of top Asian actors like Awkwafina, Tony Leung, and Michelle Yeoh. Director Destin Daniel Cretton is the first Asian director to helm an MCU film. Marvel’s commitment to Asian representation in “Shang Chi” has drawn comparisons to 2017’s “Black Panther,” which saw success with a predominantly Black cast and crew.

How to watch ‘Shang-Chi’ when it premieres

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” premiered on September 3, but it’s only available in theaters. To watch the movie during it’s initial release window, you’ll need to buy a ticket to see it on the big screen at your local theater.

When is ‘Shang-Chi’ coming to Disney Plus and on-demand streaming?

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” will be available to all Disney Plus subscribers starting November 12. Disney originally said the movie will be available to stream after 45 days in theaters, but the official Disney Plus release date is more than 60 days after the film’s theatrical debut.

It’s possible you’ll be able to rent or buy “Shang-Chi” from services like Vudu, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Google Play before it arrives on Disney Plus, but an official VOD release date has not been confirmed.

In the past, Disney Plus charged a Premier Access fee ($30) for movies still playing in theaters, but subscribers won’t have to pay extra to watch “Shang-Chi.”
