- The January 6 committee sent a letter to Ivanka Trump on Thursday asking for her voluntary cooperation with its probe.
- Ivanka was a White House senior advisor under the Trump administration.
- She reportedly tried to get her father to stop the violence as rioters stormed the Capitol.
The House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot on Thursday requested former President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump to voluntarily meet with the panel and provide information for its probe.
Committee chair Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi wrote in a letter to Ivanka that he is seeking her cooperation because she was present at the White House on January 6 and had knowledge of Trump’s conversations and behavior that day.
“We write to request your voluntary cooperation with our investigation on a range of critical topics,” Thompson wrote. “We respect your privacy, and our questions will be limited to issues relating to January 6th, the activities that contributed to or influenced events on January 6th, and your role in the White House during that period.”
The request comes after the January 6 committee revealed earlier this month that it obtained first-hand testimony that Ivanka, who served as a White House senior advisor during Trump’s tenure, was at the White House during the attack and tried on multiple occasions to get her father to stop the violence.
“Testimony obtained by the Select Committee indicates that members of the White House staff requested your assistance on multiple occasions to intervene in an attempt to persuade President Trump to address the ongoing lawlessness and violence on Capitol Hill,” Thompson wrote in Thursday’s letter. “The testimony also suggests that you agreed to talk to the President, but had to make multiple efforts to persuade President Trump to act.”
Thompson said that the committee would like to meet with Ivanka “soon” and proposed dates for the first week or second week of February.
“A full and accurate accounting of what happened on January 6th is critical to the Select Committee’s legislative recommendations. And the American people deserve to understand all the relevant details,” Thompson wrote.
Several figures in Trump’s circle, including former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and one-time White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, have refused to comply with subpoenas from the January 6 committee.
More recently, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a Trump ally, told the committee that he would not voluntarily cooperate with its investigation, calling it “illegitimate.”
Trump has also repeatedly criticized the investigation and attempted to block the panel from receiving executive branch documents that it said were relevant to its probe. The Supreme Court on Wednesday evening denied Trump’s request, clearing the way for the committee to obtain the presidential records.
