Depending on your ISP and where you live, a custom DNS might be the way to go to make your internet experience a tad bit better (or snappier). And if you’re using a mesh system like Nest Wifi, which is without a doubt one of the best ones around, then we will show you how you can set your own custom DNS in no time.

Before going ahead, please note that setting up a custom DNS, apart from your ISP’s, is not always an ideal solution to fixing slow internet problems. Your 10Mbps connection won’t magically give you near-100Mbps speeds, but it can become far more responsive than before if you have a good DNS server near you, such as Google’s famous 8.8.8.8 or Cloudfare’s wonderful 1.1.1.1.

Again, that entirely depends on where you live.

There are several apps available which will tell you which DNS will work best for you. But it’s highly likely that your ISP’s own DNS is good enough. Also keep in mind that there are other things to consider as well if your internet still feels sluggish even after a DNS change – such as line quality, your modem, the cables you’re using and so on. If switching from one DNS to another doesn’t change anything for you then you might want to contact your ISP for further assistance.

With all that babble out of the way, here’s how you can set a custom DNS in your Nest Wifi system.

Tutorial

Step 1. Launch the Google Home app on your iPhone, iPad or Android device.

Remember, you cannot do this using a web browser and you have to use the official app which is signed in using your own email address. If someone else set up your Nest Wifi system for you, only they can change the DNS for you unless they gave you access to the Google Home app as well.

Step 2. Once the app has loaded up, tap on the Wi-Fi button at the top.

Step 3. Now tap on the settings cogwheel on the top right hand corner as shown below.

Step 4. Scroll down and tap on Advanced networking.

Step 5. Now tap on DNS Settings at the top.

Step 6. By default, Nest Wifi is set to Automatic, which his a combination of your ISP’s DNS and Google’s own and it switches between them depending on which one is performing better. But over here, you’re going to tap on Custom.

Note: Mine is set to ‘ISP’ as it works better for me compared to anything else I try.

Step 7. Over here you’ll see all the fields which you can fill out, including the primary server, secondary server and so on. For the sake of this tutorial, we’re going to use Cloudflare’s DNS. Once it is set, tap on Save at the bottom, right above the keyboard and then tap on the save button again on the top right hand corner once the Custom screen goes away.

Once you’ve saved everything, your internet might disconnect for a few seconds and then come back online. And that’s it, you now have a custom DNS set on your Nest Wifi mesh system.
