How Covid cases have risen during NSW’s wild weather

The BA.2 variant, a sub-strain of Omicron, spreads faster than its predecessor and is expected to become the dominant strain in NSW. Acting chief health officer Marianne Gale raised the alarm on the new variant in a budget estimates hearing on Thursday, while Health Minister Brad Hazzard said early studies from the University of NSW showed the cases could “more than double” in just six weeks.“While the community may have gone to sleep on the virus, the virus hasn’t gone to sleep in the community,” Mr Hazzard said. Covid case number slider March 10Covid weekly figures in NSW were up 28 per cent from the previous seven days, however hospitalisations are well down from the peak of the Omicron wave.Latest statistics show there are 124,464 active cases in NSW as of Wednesday, based on the NSW Health definition which deems people who have tested positive to Covid-19 in the previous 14 days as active cases.The daily figure count continues to bounce around with 13,179 new active cases recorded on Wednesday, compared to 9017 on Monday and 9466 this time last week.In Sydney, postcode data showed current hot spots included the 2155 postcode, which takes in Castle Hill, with 1821 active cases as of Wednesday.The Liverpool postcode, which also incorporates Casula and surrounds, has 1349 active cases, while the 2145 postcode, taking in the Cumberland region, has 1301 active cases.RELATED: WHERE TO FIND A RAT TEST IN NSWThe 2765 postcode – which takes in suburbs including Oakville and Maraylya – has 1082 cases with other hot spots including the sprawling 2570 postcode – spanning Nattai to Camden – with 1039 active cases. The Campbelltown postcode of 2560 has 1060 active cases.In the city’s east, areas with relatively high numbers of active cases include the 2040 postcode in the inner west with 624 cases, the 2066 postcode which includes Lane Cove with 591 cases, and the 2036 postcode which takes in suburbs such as Eastgardens with 551 cases.Outside Sydney, active case numbers remain stagnantly high in the Central Coast with the 2259 postcode recording 1051 active cases, while the 2250 postcode which takes in Gosford has 1022.SEE HOW MANY ACTIVE CASES ARE IN YOUR SUBURB*Click on the three horizontal lines in the top left of the map.
