‘Unforgivable’: Covid cases soar in WA

There were 17,033 new infections overnight, taking the total number of active cases to 68,893.Three historical deaths were also reported – a woman aged in her 90s, a man aged in his 80s, and a man aged in his 70s.There are now 275 people in hospital, including seven in intensive care.Australian Medical Association WA president Mark Duncan-Smith urged Premier Mark McGowan to reintroduce restrictions and said at the very least he was “begging” for masks to be used more broadly to help flatten the curve.“Our medical system is in danger of being overrun in the next week,” he told reporters on Wednesday.“For the Premier not to reintroduce some restrictions at this stage may be unforgivable.“I can see where this is going and it scares me greatly.”Masks are currently only required in high-risk settings, such as public transport and hospitals.“As we expected, the number of Covid-19 cases in our community has risen in recent days,” Mr McGowan wrote on social media.“This is due to a number of factors, including easing public health measures and the end of school holidays. Not to mention our free RAT program.“While the rising case numbers has been expected, it’s an important reminder that the pandemic is not over yet.“That’s why I want to reiterate that just because masks are no longer required in most settings, it doesn’t mean that they should be gathering dust.”NSW recorded 12,265 new cases and 11 deaths. There are 1452 people in hospital, including 48 in intensive care. Victoria recorded 13,973 new cases and 17 deaths.There are now 533 patients in hospital, including 33 in intensive care and five requiring ventilation.Queensland recorded 7427 new infections and 10 deaths.There are now 459 people in hospital with the virus, including 14 in intensive care.
