‘I was told I’d never make it’: Erin opens up

Now, more than 15 years since entering the sport world, the trailblazing broadcaster has opened up about being underestimated and overlooked in an industry where women are now “front and centre”. Speaking to Flash’s Georgie Tunny, the Sky News Australia host says she was told by prominent people in the media that she would never be taken seriously. “Absolutely I was told early on by a lot of people that I’d never make it in sport” Molan said. She described her time at Nine’s NRL variety program, The Footy Show, as “a real career highlight and such an incredible experience”. Offer ends October 31, 2022 >However, the cyber safety advocate says after her first night on the program she made the “rookie error” of checking Twitter, where she was bombarded with violent death threats. “They were threating to kill me and to rape me, because they didn’t think that a woman should be sitting on that show,” said the breakfast radio host, who went on to host the program for several years and who has been seen as a leader for women in sports journalism. “They were tearing me to pieces.” After spending the past decade and a half covering sport, Molan is about to make the jump into the world of news, politics and current affairs, hosting her own weekly program, Erin, on Sky News Australia and available to stream on Flash. When asked what she’s most looking forward to about her new show, the broadcaster said she was excited to delve into inspiring stories, in-depth interviews and provocative takes on the news of the day.Molan is also looking forward to “giving it to” her father, NSW Liberal Senator and frequent Sky News contributor Jim Molan. “Generally, the power balance has been in his favour,” said Molan, who is looking forward to dictating “things to him a little bit”.Molan describes her former army major general father as an “incredible human being who can give you a real shot of perspective”.
