Queen Elizabeth’s comic turn with Paddington Bear wins BAFTA

The late Queen Elizabeth has scooped up an award for her comic turn with Paddington Bear during last year’s platinum jubilee celebrations.

The late monarch and the animated bear were among the stars of a long weekend of celebrations last June to mark her 70 years on the trhone.

“Ma’amalade sandwich, Your Majesty?” Paddington asked the Queen as they shared afternoon tea in a sweet sketch beamed to millions during the jubilee concert.

She trumped the duffle-clad Paddington, quickly producing her own sandwich from her handbag – and revealing she always had a handy stash “for later”.

On Sunday, the comic turn won the “memorable moment” gong at the BAFTA TV Awards.

It beat the finale of Channel 4 comedy Derry Girls, when the people of Northern Ireland overwhelmingly voted for peace in a beautifully shot send-off segment, Max’s rescue in Stranger Things from demonic villain Vecna, British distance running legend Mo Farah revealing he was illegally trafficked in The Real Mo Farah, the final roundtable of BBC reality competition The Traitors and Nick and Charlie’s kiss in Heartstopper.

Paddington actor Simon Farnaby, who played a footman in the skit, collected the award.

“She had a very joyful Jubilee tea that day,” he said.

“The person who most deserves this award is no longer with us. We can only accept it on her behalf and say ‘Thank you, ma’am, for everything.”

Queen Elizabeth died in September, just three months after Britain celebrated her remarkable tenure on the throne.

After her death, Britons left hordes of Paddington Bear toys along with flowers at palace gates across the country in the monarch’s memory.

As those who worked on jubilee sketch took to the stage to accept the BAFTA, a CGI Paddington Bear could be seen clapping in the audience.

Paddington also tweeted his thanks.

“Mr Brown said we’ve won a BAFTA but I’m not quite sure what that means. Bear Awards For Teatime Adventures? How marvellous. Thank you all,” he wrote.
