On Triple M Sydney’s Moonman in the Morning, the comedian recalled he had just taped a TV show in Melbourne when he received a text from Crowe.“Russell Crowe texted me and said, ‘Come to my villa at Crown Towers because I’m having some people (over),’” Mooney told his radio co-host, Jess Eva.Mooney was initially apprehensive to go because his dog Rupert was battling cancer at the time and had just had a round of chemotherapy.“I said to my wife, Lou, ‘Listen, I’m not going to be home.’ She said, ‘that’s OK, I’ll be with Rupert.’”When Mooney arrived at Crowe’s “amazing villa” at Crown Towers, there were 12 other guests sitting around the dining table.“With one of the guests I shared a jazz cigarette (a slang term used for a marijuana cigarette) and became very up-ended very quickly,” Mooney said on Triple M. “I was, as the young people would say, pretty stoned.”Mooney became more and more under the influence and struggled to focus during a chat with Crowe.“I was having a conversation with Russell and he was telling me about being Noah (in the 2014 film, Noah). I was staring at his head and it was like the blood moon. It was massive and I couldn’t take my eyes off it,” Mooney recalled. The “jazz cigarette” continued to affect Mooney, with the comedian saying on Triple M: “I was becoming ill from illegal drugs, and that’s no good”.RELATED: Marty Sheargold bans reality stars from Triple M showAfter receiving a text from his wife that their dog Rupert was “getting worse”, Mooney decided to leave Crowe’s soiree.“I said, ‘Russell, listen, I’ve got to go’ … He goes, ‘Oh, really mate? I hope I’m not boring you.’ I said, ‘No, not at all. My dog’s really sick and it’s been through chemo today.’He goes, ‘Yeah, alright then.’”Crowe told Mooney to wait a moment before leaving, saying: “I’ve got something for you and your beautiful lady wife.”“He goes away and comes back with two Rabbitohs caps,” the comedian said, as his co-host Jess Eva burst into laughter.“He fits the Rabbitohs cap on my head and pulls it down like I’m a boy with a learning difficulty who needs to be assessed,” Mooney joked. “He (Crowe) goes, ‘That’s exactly where the cap should be on your head.’“I get home after this bizarre experience at Russell Crowe’s villa and I’ve still got my Rabbitohs cap on,” Mooney said. “I get through the door, there’s this dog that is so sick on the laundry floor. “I lie down beside it for the night, fall asleep, can’t go to work the next day, and wake up next to this balding dog that’s in the throes of the final part of its life wearing a Rabbitohs hat from Russell Crowe.”After hearing the tale, a stunned Jess Eva said to Mooney: “This is best story I’ve ever heard!”
