AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 jab is also no longer recommended for use as a booster in people who got the jab initially, although it can be administered in those that refuse to get one of the mRNA vaccines—Pfizer of Moderna—as their booster. The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI), in its latest set of recommendations, advised the Novavax Covid-19 vaccine can be used as a booster in a situation where “an individual aged 18 or older if no other Covid-19 vaccine brand is suitable for that individual”.“Nuvaxovid (Novavax) has been provisionally approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for use in a primary course of COVID-19 vaccination,” ATAGI stated.“There are limited data on the safety and immunogenicity of Novavax as a booster dose and it is not TGA-registered for this indication.”ATAGI has also advised the AstraZeneca vaccine is no longer a recommended vaccine for use as a booster, even when there are no contraindications or precautions for its further use.“However, it can still be used for this purpose in individuals who decline receiving an mRNA vaccine as a booster dose,” it stated. “There is no requirement for people who have already received a booster dose of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to receive an additional dose of mRNA vaccine.“The only scenario in which a booster dose using AstraZeneca vaccine is actively recommended is for people with medical contraindications to the Pfizer and/or Moderna vaccines (for example, anaphylaxis, myocarditis).”
