How Omicron sub-strain is fuelling spike in cases

The BA. 2 variant, a sub-strain of Omicron, is spreading faster than its predecessor prompting renewed calls for the community to adhere to public health measures.On Thursday last week 16,288 cases were reported in NSW – rising to 20,087 in today’s figures.Covid comparison sliderHealth experts are predicting the BA. 2 variant to become the dominant strain of the virus in coming weeks.In Sydney, postcode data showed current hot spots include the 2145 postcode, which takes in the Cumberland region, with 2148 active cases – up from 1301 last week.The Liverpool postcode, which also incorporates Casula and surrounds, has 1845 active cases as of Wednesday.RELATED: WHERE TO FIND A RAT TEST IN NSWCases are also on the rise in the Hills with the 2155 postcode registering 2758 active cases, 2390 active cases in the 2153 postcode and 1595 active cases in the 2154 postcode.The 2770 postcode – which takes in suburbs including Blacktown – has 1390 active cases with other hot spots including the sprawling 2560 postcode – taking in Campbelltown – with 1504 active cases.The 2570 postcode, spanning Nattai to Camden, has 1449 active cases – up from 1060 last week.In the city’s east, areas with relatively high numbers of active cases include the 2035 postcode taking in Randwick with 974 cases, the 2137 postcode taking in suburbs including Concord with 732 active cases and the 2065 postcode which includes Lane Cove with 670 cases.Outside Sydney, active case numbers remain stagnantly high in the Central Coast with the 2259 postcode recording 1457 active cases, while the 2250 postcode which takes in Gosford has 1157.SEE HOW MANY ACTIVE CASES ARE IN YOUR SUBURB*Click on the three horizontal lines in the top left of the map.
