Ohio is holding primaries for Congress and statewide offices on Tuesday. Polls closed at 7:30 p.m.
The races and the stakes:
Republican and Democratic candidates are vying for a chance to represent their districts in both Washington, DC and the state capitol in Columbus, Ohio.
Ohio now has 15 seats in the US House of Representatives after losing a congressional seat as a result of the 2020 Census, and is holding its first primaries following a highly contentious and chaotic congressional redistricting process and the ensuing court battle that left candidates in limbo for months.
The most recent map passed by the Ohio Redistricting Commission will almost certainly continue to be subject to more litigation and will have to be redrawn mid-decade due to relatively recent reforms to the state’s redistricting process.
But for now, according to Sabato’s Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics, three of the congressional districts are rated as a “toss-up,” meaning experts believe that the election could fall in favor of either the Republican or Democratic Parties.
In one safely-Democratic seat, the Cleveland-based 11th District, Rep. Shontel Brown is facing a rematch against former Bernie Sanders campaign co-chair Nina Turner, who she recently defeated in an expensive and heated August 2021 special election to replace now-Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge.
The three toss-ups are the state’s 1st Congressional District, 9th Congressional District, and 13th Congressional District.
The 1st Congressional District, located in southwest Ohio, is currently represented by Republican Rep. Steve Chabot. Chabot’s running for reelection and will face off against Jenn Giroux in the Republican primary election. The winner of the district’s GOP primary will match up against Greg Landsman.
In the state’s 9th Congressional District, Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur is running for reelection. Kaptur is alone on the Democratic ticket and will face off against the winner of a four-person race for the Republican Party’s nomination. The four GOP candidates include Ohio state Rep. Craig Riedel, state Sen. Theresa Gavarone, Beth Deck, and J.R. Majewski.
In Ohio’s 13th Congressional District, candidates are looking to replace Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan, who is running for US Senate. Only one Democrat is running in the race to replace Ryan, Emilia Sykes, the former minority leader of the Ohio State House of Representatives. There are seven Republicans fighting for the GOP’s nomination: Madison Gesiotto Gilbert, Gregory Wheeler, Dante Sabatucci, Ryan Saylor, Shay Hawkins, Janet Folger Porter, and Santana F. King.
