Apple has a New Handwashing Timer Feature in watchOS 7, You Can Enable it on Your Apple Watch Right Away
Washing our hands is something which we should be doing on a regular basis anyway. But due to the ongoing pandemic, it’s become more important that we engage in the practice more than ever before in order to keep ourselves, and other, absolutely safe and healthy.
Apple realizes the important of washing hands and has baked in a automatic timer with the new watchOS 7 update which kicks into action when you are, wait for it, washing your hands. Called Handwashing Timer, when enabled, it will count down to 20 seconds and will ping you once the timer is up, telling you that you have washed your hands properly. Just in case you are wondering, you have to wash your hands for 20 seconds in order to kill any germs or viruses that may have latched onto your hand. Obviously, the washing technique matters, and the Apple Watch won’t help you in that, but 20 seconds is what you should aim for and watchOS 7 will encourage you on that end.
Weirdly enough, the feature is actually disabled by default, but we will show you how to enable it and you can test it out for yourself.
Tutorial
Note: This feature requires watchOS 7 running on the Apple Watch Series 5, Series 4 and Series 3. The newly announced Series 6 and SE models already have the update preinstalled.
Step 1. Press the Digital Crown to view your grid of apps.
Step 2. Find the Settings app and tap on it.
Step 3. Scroll down and find Handwashing.
Step 4. Turn the feature on by tapping on Handwashing Timer.
Step 5. Now simply wash your hands and you will see the timer kick into action, it’s as simple as that.
Given how Apple highlighted the feature in its WWDC 2020 keynote, it’s very surprising that it is off by default. Anyway, now you know how to enable it and I highly recommend that you tell everyone around you how to do it as well.
