Now the executive, Pablo Hidalgo, has apologised online, saying his post: “Emotions are not for sharing” was “sarcastic self-mockery” and not intended to hurt anyone.Except a whole host of fans are now furious with Lucasfilm. It’s like instead of reincarnating a couple of fan favourites, back came Jar Jar Binks and that annoying singing furry creature from the “refreshed” version of Return Of The Jedi. Then there’s a mob of other fans who are claiming this is all a mocked-up controversy to get the crying fan more followers.Plus, just because it’s Star Wars, there are fans who are claiming that The Mandalorian shouldn’t just try to make fans happy! That’s right, there is a school of thought out there that the cuteness of “Baby Yoda” is unbearable and the attempts to clean up the controversies from the final set of movies is annoying.
I’m not sure what approach these fans were hoping for. Perhaps they’re like the infamous Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons, who’s not happy unless he can pronounce: “Worst episode/comic/Star Wars ever!”Off the back of The Mandalorian’s success, Disney has announced a whole host of new Star Wars TV shows, plus movies, including one by the genius Taika Waititi. And he summed things up beautifully when he tweeted a response to Disney plugging his new film: “What? Ugh, as a longtime fan of Star Wars, I’m so angry about what I’m going to do to ruin it.”Yes, that old proverb about “never looking a gift horse in the mouth” doesn’t hold true for Star Wars.Instead, fans would want to cut it open like it was a Tauntaun in a Hoth snowstorm and then all dive inside, so they could continue the fight properly.Maybe Lucasfilm and Disney need to embrace this. Not literally — I’m not suggesting they start disembowelling horses with lightsabers. But maybe throw everything that fans hate into one show, to take the focus off the others. A mash-up of dancing Ewoks, unpopular characters and of course Jar Jar Binks.Except … knowing Star Wars fans, that would probably be the one that rated best.
