Watching Bridgerton with mum: ‘We couldn’t stop laughing’

Social media has been awash with ongoing commentary, many detailing their embarrassment as they squirmed on the sofa watching the series as aristocrats Daphne and Simon get intimate on screen in the smash hit series. Here, SMARTdaily sits down with model Simone Holtznagel and her mum, Margaret, to get their verdict.Margaret Holtznagel, 59, teacherThe power imbalance between men and women made me feel more uncomfortable than any of the raunchy sex scenes.Overall I quite enjoyed Bridgerton because I like historical fiction. I loved the costuming of it and all of the buildings. It was all just very opulent and beautiful. At the same time, I was thinking, ‘Thank god I was not around in that era’. Women had no rights or no say in anything; they were fairly downtrodden really. On the surface it was all very lovely and entertaining. It raised a few things for me too, the fact women were governed by the men and what was good for the men certainly wasn’t good for the women.I think I would have preferred to be with the artist bloke and all of his little activities that he did. That looked a lot more fun.In terms of the sex scenes, I tried not to make eye contact with Simone while watching those. It was funny, to be honest. I was expecting it to be a little more racy than it was though.I wonder if they actually did “that” back then. Did they?Obviously they had sex but it seems they were prudish so would they get that raunchy? I don’t know. It didn’t bother me watching with Sim but I certainly wouldn’t watch it with my mother. She is 96. The most risque thing when I was a kid was Number 96 and we were never allowed to watch that.It was a good show overall though, very entertaining. I’m looking forward to the second season.Simone Holtznagel, 27, modelI couldn’t stop laughing watching Bridgerton. We watched Brokeback Mountain together so we were fine with Bridgerton.I think mum felt a bit more awkward watching the sex scenes but we laughed through most of them. There was one scene in a rotunda; it was like the X-rated version of Liesl and Friedrich on The Sound of Music. There has been so much talk about it though that to me it was just your regular 50 Shades of Grey. I don’t think it was that shocking. The way everyone has been talking about it, it is as if they have never seen a sex scene in their life. Like, hello, Titanic. With the treatment of women back then, it is sh — t to see but in some ways, I have to ask if we have really changed that much since then. Like with the girl who was pregnant before getting married and the judgment she was put through. I feel like that sort of stuff still does happen. Yes, there is the Duke but I like that the females are the main characters and their journey is explored and a more modern woman is explored in the character Eloise (played by actor Claudia Jessie). The most excited I got was hearing Julie Andrews’ voice being the narrator because I love her.I do think it was kind of cool being Gossip Girlish with Lady Whistledown. I did like that element and the dude (actor Rege-Jean Page playing the Duke of Hastings, Simon Bassett) is very hot. Everyone is talking about him, so good for him.I did love the costumes and all of that and I did think if I was alive back then, I would probably not be single right now. I reckon everyone would have wanted to dance with me, don’t you mum?
