Mr Biden’s address comes 50 days into his presidency and exactly a year after the World Health Organisation first declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.Mr Biden “will discuss the many sacrifices the American people have made over the last year and the grave loss communities and families across the country have suffered,” said White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.“The President will look forward to highlighting the role of Americans — that Americans will play in beating the virus and moving the country toward getting back to normal.”Mr Biden will offer hope in the form of an accelerated vaccination delivery that will offer enough shots for every American adult in May as well as the passage of a long awaited relief package. He will speak just hours after his first legislative victory, signing into law the $A2.44 trillion (US$1.9 trillion) American Rescue Plan, which will deliver up to $A1800 (US$1400) for every adult as soon as this weekend.Mr Biden has been laying low during his first weeks in office compared to his predecessors. This will be his first major address since a White House ceremony last month when America marked its 500,000th COVID death.Although the vaccine rollout has slowed the spread, more than 530,000 have now died in the US.Mr Biden has also taken an historically long time to hold a press briefing, with Barack Obama having first taken questions 20 days into his presidency and Donald Trump doing so at 27 days.
