Film’s confusing ending explained

OSTN Staff

Sure it’s four hours long, but who needs sleep? Not me! Anyway, despite multiple viewings of the movie, which streams locally on BINGE and Foxtel, you might still be confused about the ending. Good news, that’s what this piece is all about: Get ready to have the Justice League Snyder Cut ending explained.Only … Wait: which ending are you talking about? Because technically, of course, the credits are the end of the movie — and unlike the 2017 theatrical cut, there is no mid-credits or end-credits scene. But even more technically, the main plot of the movie ends at about three hours and thirty minutes in … And then the movie continues to roll out several other endings for the final half an hour.So here you go, the Justice League Snyder Cut endings — plural — explained.RELATED: Zack Snyder’s Justice League gets near perfect fan ratingWhat is the Justice League Snyder Cut Ending, Explained? So get this, there are these three cubes called Mother Boxes. If brought together, they form something called The Unity, which is one, singular cube. When the cube is formed it completely obliterates a planet. Darkseid (Ray Porter), an evil large man from a planet called Apokolips has used the Unity to enslave/destroy thousands of planets, but has only been stopped once: on Earth. After he was defeated by the combined forces of Atlantis, Themyscira and regular human beings, the three Mother Boxes were split up and given to each group to hide.At the end of the movie, Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) has rejoined the Mother Boxes. The Justice League tries to stop him, but they’re too late. The Unity is joined, and all life on Earth is destroyed … Or is it? The Flash (Ezra Miller) earlier in the movie established that when he runs as fast as the speed of light, weird things happen with time. Specifically, time starts to reverse. As a shockwave flies out of the Unity obliterating the planet, The Flash runs super-fast, reversing time enough so that he’s able to shoot electricity into Cyborg (Ray Fisher), giving him the juice the latter needs to properly interface with the Mother Boxes.Inside the interface, Cyborg sees himself with his body restored, as well as his parents. Only it’s actually the three Mother Boxes, who are evil artificial intelligences, tempting him. He rips the Mother Boxes apart, splitting up the Unity before it can destroy Earth (remember, The Flash reversed time) and the Justice League joins together to absolutely mangle Steppenwolf. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) even chops off his head as they throw him through a portal to Apokolips. Darkseid, furious about Steppenwolf’s defeat, crushes his head under his foot and says the need to go back to the “old ways,” which means he’s taking an invasion fleet and heading to Earth. The Justice League, triumphant, stands on top of a nuclear reactor and looks out at an abandoned Russian town, pleased. And we get little codas for every character, discovering that Batman is back in Gotham, Wonder Woman is stopping crimes in London (I think), The Flash has a job at the Central City Police Department and is working to clear his father’s (Billy Crudup) name in the murder of his mum, Aquaman heads off into Aquaman the movie, Cyborg has finally made peace with his now deceased father, and Superman is back in Smallville now that Bruce bought back his mother’s farm. His mother, by the way, is named Martha, and so is Batman’s mother! Don’t know if you knew that.Everything wraps up nicely. The end? No, it isn’t, there’s still thirty minutes to go.Stream Zack Snyder’s Justice League on BINGE. New customers get a 14-day free trial. Sign up at binge.com.auWhat is the Justice League Snyder Cut’s Second Ending, Explained? In the 2017 theatrical cut of Justice League there were two credits scenes. One had a very fun race between Superman and The Flash, which hearkens back to the comics, as well as a moment earlier in that cut of the film where they talk about who is faster. Neither of those scenes appear in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. However, there is a very different version of the credits scene featuring Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg).Last seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and barely mentioned in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Lex was left with his head now shaved, obsessed with Mother Boxes and the coming of Darkseid, in Arkham Asylum. In Justice League, he escapes thanks to an also bald inmate, and is next found living in luxury on a yacht. He’s approached by Deathstroke (Joe Manganiello), a mercenary who lost his eye thanks to Batman at some previous point in history. Lex tells Deathstroke that Batman is secretly Bruce Wayne, and they toast — to crime! In the 2017 cut, many of the shots are the same, but thanks to some ADR dialogue from Eisenberg and an insert shot, instead of telling Deathstroke Batman’s secret identity, Lex proposes that just as the Justice League is formed, they should form “a league of our own.” Naturally, this leads directly into the events of A League of Our Own. I’m kidding. This will never be picked up on in any way.Regardless, good ending! Movie is over, right? Nope! There’s still another 18 minutes left. What is the Justice League Snyder Cut’s Third Ending, Explained?Okay, so remember when Batman casually mentioned he had a nightmare about Barry Allen? It’s possible that scene might have been in the theatrical cut, to be honest, but after six hours of Justice League my brain is mush. Regardless, in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Batman had a nightmare about Barry Allen running through time and telling him that Lois was the key. To what? Well, we sort of find out in this movie, though it’s (I know, I’m shocked too) underplayed. In this next section we see what is called the “Knightmare” world again. This is in a way a preview of what could have been in Justice League Part 2, a movie that we’ll never see, where Darkseid does make his way to Earth with his invasion force and lays waste to the world. Earlier in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, we saw a montage of what would have happened when Cyborg interfaces with the Mother Box while trying to resurrect Superman: Wonder Woman is dead; Aquaman gets murdered by Darkseid; Lois Lane is a charred skeleton, and Darkseid uses the Anti-Life Equation to bend Superman to his will. After that, the only “heroes” left are Batman, The Flash, Cyborg, Deathstroke, Mera (Amber Heard) and … The Joker (Jared Leto). They’re all working together to get The Flash somewhere in particular so he can reverse time, they can save Lois, and make sure the Knightmare world never happens. The Joker makes some absolutely unnecessary jokes about giving Batman a reach-around. Batman says “f**k” which is very cool.At the end, we get presented with the ultimate cliffhanger: an Evil Superman hangs in the air, booting up his heat vision at the “heroes,” and get this, he’s wearing his black Superman suit, so you know he’s evil now. (Checks notes), oh, he was wearing his black Superman suit for most of this movie? Okay, whatever then, good cliffhanger. And that’s it! OR IS IT? No, it’s not, there are still 10 minutes in the running time.RELATED: How to watch Zack Snyder’s Justice League in AustraliaWas Zack Snyder’s Justice League better than the 2017 film? What is the Justice League Snyder Cut’s Fourth Ending, Explained? This is great! More endings! Keep going! My favourite part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy is when they’re jumping on a bed a bunch at the end of Return of the King!Anyway, speaking of beds, turns out this is once again just Batman having a bad dream. Of note, this was shot with COVID-19 protocols, which is why Ben Affleck looks way less bulked up than the Batman look he’s sported for the rest of the movie, and also at least five years older. He hears a noise outside, and discovers a green man. That green man is none other than Martian Manhunter (Harry Lennix), who showed up previously in the movie bizarrely masquerading as Superman’s mother (maybe we should call him “Martha-n Manhunter” instead?) so he could encourage Lois Lane (Amy Adams) to stop doing an exclusive preview of The Woman in the Window and instead go outside.Martian Manhunter tells Bruce that he was really inspired by everything the Justice League did and though he’s been hiding for years, is now ready to be a hero, too. Also that Darkseid is coming, the Anti-Life Equation is on Earth, and they need to get ready to fight. Bruce, to his credit, is like “I don’t care,” and then Martian Manhunter flies off. With that out of the way, time to explain the next five endings:…Just kidding, that’s actually the end of the movie, though there is a beautiful dedication of “For Autumn,” which pays tribute to Zack Snyder’s daughter. You can read more about that in Anna Menta’s lovely rundown of the credits song, which are about eight minutes long in case you were wondering. This story originally appeared on Decider and has been reproduced here with permissionHow to find news on news.com.au
