More than 830,000 doses were cleared after the TGA approved the release of the first four batches. In a statement, the TGA announced the Australian-made batches were tested to ensure they had “exactly the same composition and performance as the overseas-manufactured vaccine, the same quality” and were contamination free. The development should speed up Australia’s rollout, which has come under fire for being slow in recent weeks, and follows on from last month’s TGA approval of the internationally-produced AstraZeneca vaccine.Up until now Australia has relied on vaccines produced overseas, leaving the country vulnerable to supply chain issues as seen in the case of the European Union. But over the next few months the country will have access to 50 million doses of the AstraZeneca jab, developed in Broadmeadows and distributed into vials at Parkville.Under TGA rules, “each and every” batch making up those fifty million doses will undergo the same tests before it can be administered to the public. The approval is a “major step in Australia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic”, according to the TGA.
