Good morning and welcome to 10 Things in Tech. If this was forwarded to you, sign up here.
Let’s get started.
1. The CEOs of Google, Facebook, and Twitter will testify before Congress today. The tech moguls will face questioning on how misinformation – specifically around the pandemic and the election – spreads on their platforms. Here’s how to watch their testimonies.
2. The Mormon Church’s secretive $100 billion fund slashed big-tech stocks last quarter. Ensign Peak Advisors – one of the world’s largest funds – also quadrupled its Tesla stake and bought more than 40,000 GameStop shares. This is what we know about the firm’s investments.
3. Former employees faced sexism at Fine Brothers Entertainment, the YouTube giant behind the viral “Kids React” videos. We spoke with 26 former employees, who said in addition to a toxic work culture, that they experienced or witnessed sexism – that the founders often dismissed as “edgy comedy.” More from our exclusive report.
4. Elon Musk said European rivals are “aiming too low” for Mars travel. SpaceX, on the other hand, is planning intergalactic travel in the near future. Here’s when the CEO said he expects to land rockets on Mars.
5. Amazon delivery drivers must give “biometric consent” to be tracked in order to work. If employees don’t consent to be tracked by the end of the week, they will reportedly lose their job. This is what we know so far.
6. Leaked Facebook documents show the company is more lenient on bullying if the abuse is directed at celebrities. The 300-page document says the platform gives “public figures” – including journalists and those with more than 100,000 followers – fewer bullying protections than private individuals. See more details from the leaked guidelines.
7. MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell’s social-media site is now called “Frank.” Currently just a static webpage, the site’s description says it’s “the voice of free speech.” Take a look for yourself.
8. Bernie Sanders said he’s uncomfortable with Twitter banning “racist, sexist” Trump. The senator said he took issue with “a few high-tech people” controlling public discourse, adding that soon it could be someone else who is banned.
9. These are the 95 most powerful people at Amazon Web Services. In light of AWS’s recent CEO appointment, we’re highlighting an exclusive org chart designed to show you who’s who in the company. Meet the people with the most power in the cloud business.
10. Compass is gearing up for an ambitious $10 billion IPO. We pored over the residential brokerage’s 261-page S-1 filing – so you don’t have to. These are our five key revelations.
