Newman confirmed he was contacted recently by an individual who asked if he would take a meeting to discuss him getting active in politics.“As with all these things, I took a phone call from someone who said they were from that party,” Newman confirmed on Friday.“You never know if people are fair dinkum or not when they ring you up so I said, ‘Well, I don’t know if you are serious or not but I will have the rest of this conversation on the basis you are.’“He said, ‘I just wanted to know if you would be interested in having a cup of coffee with the party.’“I said, ‘I am happy to have a cup of coffee with you, but if you are asking me to be part of it or join it, or whatever, I am not interested in that just for not any other reason that I don’t have a bent politically for any party whatever it is — unless of course Donald Trump asked me to join his.”So a career in politics is off the agenda for the former Footy Show star and host of the headline making You Cannot Be Serious podcast.“I am not interested in any political aspirations no matter what party it is, but I’ll be very happy to have a coffee with people who are sincere about whatever it is they want to speak to me about,” he said.fiona.byrne@news.com.au
