Billy has a gun in his tackle box, foreshadowing a violent showdown in the Mare of Easttown finale.However, is it possible that Billy isn’t the killer at all? After Mare hangs up her phone on boss Chief Carter (John Douglas Thompson), the elder officer is given a tip from Erin’s best friend Jess (Ruby Cruz). The teen girl finally shares that she helped Dylan burn Erin’s journals, but not without saving one incriminating passage.So what was in Erin’s journals? Why is it a game-changer? And could it be that Billy didn’t kill Erin after all on Mare of Easttown? With only one episode of Mare of Easttown left, we have a lot of questions…Did Billy Ross really kill Erin McMenamin?Well, it certainly seems so, right? After all, Billy’s own father saw him covered in blood immediately after the murder. We know that he and Erin carried on an incestuous affair and that he’s likely D.J.’s father. Finally, Billy confessed to his brother John that he killed Erin. Or did he?There are two reasons why we think it’s possible Billy Ross is being set up for Erin’s murder. The first has to do with whatever Jess revealed was in Erin’s journals…which we’ll get to soon. The second? The weird way in which John Ross seemed to be speaking on behalf of his brother throughout the episode.When John confronts the upset Billy about the murder, he sort of coaches him into saying he killed Erin. Watch the scene again. He says, “I’m going to need to hear you say it…” And then Billy tearfully confesses to him that he killed Erin.Also suspicious? We only know that something happened during the Ross family reunion a few years back. While the presumption is that Billy raped Erin, it could have been John. After all, the necklace she received was purchased by someone simply named “Ross.” That doesn’t prove it was Billy or John.Furthermore, John has a habit of lying and living a double life. Could it be that he was carrying on an affair with Erin? That Billy helped him kill the girl and was in charge of getting rid of the bloody clothes? That John is manipulating his brother into taking the fall?This is all conjecture and the only reason we are double-guessing Billy’s confession has to do with whatever it was that Jess showed Chief Carter was written in Erin’s diaries…What is the secret in Erin’s journals on Mare of Easttown?RELATED: What you need to know about Mare of Easttown’s breakout starThe Erin McMenamin case seems closed by the end of Mare of Easttown episode 6, but something Jess shows the Chief shocks him enough to yell that they need to get Mare on the phone now. We don’t yet know what was in Erin’s diaries, but we do know that whatever it was, her “friends” decided it had to be destroyed. Jess originally lied to Mare about the journals’ locations — which only led her to the necklace that one of her Ross cousins bought — and later helped destroy most of them. However, the sweet girl decided to save one important passage.Naturally, we have a lot of questions. Why would the teens who knew Erin best need to destroy her inner-most thoughts? What is written on the page Jess saved? And why was whatever was written in Erin’s journals dangerous enough for Dylan to threaten to kill Jess (if she exposed it)? And could it be tied to the Ross brothers? After all, Jess knew that DJ was probably not Dylan’s. (She mistakenly thought it was Mare’s ex-husband’s child.)Obviously Mare of Easttown has at least one major twist yet to throw us.
