All you need to do to connect your Apple Pencil to an iPad is charge the Apple Pencil with that iPad.

If you have a first-generation Apple Pencil, unscrew the cap on the back of the Pencil and plug it into your iPad’s charging port. Unlock your iPad, and tap the Pair button that appears.
