“Gossip Girl,” a brand-new reboot of the popular teen drama, is now streaming on HBO Max. The premiere episode will also be broadcast on The CW on July 9. The new series was created by Joshua Safran, an executive producer and writer for the original “Gossip Girl” that aired on The CW from 2007 to 2012.
Like the original “Gossip Girl” series, the new show is focused on the turbulent friendships and romantic relationships between a small group of rich teenagers as they finish high school in Manhattan. But the teenagers have to be careful who they trust, because an anonymous social media user known as “Gossip Girl” is ready to reveal their dirty secrets to the world. Kristen Bell returns to voice the title character.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight about Kristen Bell’s return, new cast member Emily Alyn Lynd said, “She’s Gossip Girl, even if she’s not Gossip Girl, she’s Gossip Girl. We need Kristen Bell, are you kidding me?”
Speaking with the Daily Beast, Joshua Safran said the new series doesn’t shy away from sexually explicit situations when streamed on HBO Max. The version of the “Gossip Girl” premiere airing on The CW, however, is expected to be edited for broadcast standards.
Where to watch the ‘Gossip Girl’ reboot
The pilot episode of “Gossip Girl” is available now on HBO Max. The first six episodes will be released weekly on Thursdays, but dates are not yet finalized for the last four episodes of the first season.
In addition to HBO Max, the premiere episode of “Gossip Girl” will be broadcast on The CW on July 9 at 8 p.m. ET. Only the series premiere is currently scheduled to be shown on The CW, so viewers who want to watch subsequent episodes will need a subscription to HBO Max.
The cheapest subscription to HBO Max costs $10 a month, but this basic plan includes ads and does not feature in-theater movie releases. Access to ad-free streaming and new in-theater titles costs $15 a month.
HBO Max does not offer a free trial through it’s site, but if you’re a subscriber to Hulu and have not yet tried HBO, you can get a one-week free trial of Hulu’s HBO Max add-on. The HBO Max add-on costs $15 a month following your free trial.
HBO Max is available on most smartphones, computers, Xbox and PlayStation consoles, smart TVs (though not LG models), Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and more. For more information about supported devices visit the HBO Max website.
