In a damning post about Australia’s Covid situation and the effects of lockdown, the singer, whose real name is Toni Watson, said mental health was suffering and she wanted to give Aussies some hope. She pledged to help small businesses, saying it’s getting to a point where “nobody can see a way out”.Chatfield refuted the musician’s claim that “a lot more people have died from suicide than Covid over the last two years”.Chatfield said: “It’s just incorrect, the reason we haven’t had as many Covid deaths is because of lockdowns. Disappointing.“I just wish people would stop saying suicide rates are higher than Covid deaths because it simply isn’t true.“You’re telling me more than 4.29 million … have died of suicide in the last 18 months?“It’s just incorrect, isn’t it.”Covid has claimed 4.3 million lives worldwide, with 940 of those in Australia.Suicides in 2019, before the pandemic began, claimed 3318 Australian lives, of which 75 per cent were men. Suicide was also the leading cause of death among people aged 15-44 between 2016-2018.Tones And I wrote: “If ya don’t work at Woolies/Uber eats Or have a government funded job ya f—ed.“It’s so hard to watch so many people suffering, it’s getting to a point where nobody can see a way out.“I try and share love always. But I just don’t know what to do to help my fans or friends or just fellow aussies feel OK.“It’s really up to aussies to help out aussies!“I’m only one person but if you know small business either you or your family or friends that are really on the verge of giving up please send me a DM! I’m gonna try and help out 10 small businesses. With promotion/$5000 cash and just some f—ing hope geeze!“Keep going and your mental health is so important and you are so worthy!”Tones And I, a four-time ARIA winner, also asked what the plan was.“There has not been enough conversation around mental health and suicide as our lives are being ruled by Covid updates,’’ she wrote.“Now the government is putting the majority of the country into a position of huge pain and suffering. Everyone is loosing (sic) everything, small business’s (sic) have gone under, people are locked away from friends and family, walking on the beach is becoming voodoo.“You have created a situation where people are staying in doors (trying to do the right thing) but it’s gone on for so long that we have forgotten what “life” we are even fighting for!”The singer said if you worked at a bar/club, the arts, hospitality, tourism, surf instructor, dance teacher, hair dresser and retail you were “f—ed”.She received support from music icon Tina Arena, who wrote that she was feeling helpless for everyone and no one was showing any real leadership.Tones And I has previously spoken about how her mental health has suffered since finding fame.Last month she said she planned to give herself another four years of performing before becoming a songwriter. In future she wants to work with kids in schools, busk, direct film clips and write music, not only for herself but also for films and other artists.Tones and I had a meteoric rise after releasing Johnny Run Away and Dance Monkey in 2019.Last month she released her first full-length album, Welcome to the Madhouse.Mental health help lines – Lifeline and Beyond Blue
