Top doc’s message to vulnerable people

Chief health officer Jeannette Young warned the older population they would be vulnerable to the state’s next outbreak, which she described as “inevitable”.The “clear message” comes as Queensland recorded zero new locally acquired cases of Covid-19 and the state restricted travel to NSW to essential workers.“We will not be able to hold back community spread of Covid in our state if we aren’t vaccinated,” Dr Young told reporters on Saturday morning.“So please, there are still some people who are 60 years of age or older who haven’t been vaccinated. You really and truly need to come forward and get vaccinated. You are the most vulnerable people in our community.”The CHO assured the older population who “obviously” have concerns about the safety of the vaccine and urged those who were hesitant to speak to their GP.Dr Young said a greater uptake of vaccinations among older Queenslanders would mean “we’ll have a disease we can manage” and allow life to return to normal.Of the eligible population, 45.2 per cent of Queenslanders have received their first dose of the vaccine and 26.8 per cent have received their second. But Dr Young warned the threat will remain when vaccination rates hit 80 per cent for those who have refused to protect themselves against Covid.“When we do open up and get cases, because of course we’re going to get cases, we can manage them and give them the care that we always give Queenslanders when they’re sick,” Dr Young said. From Saturday morning, essential workers required to travel into NSW and back will need to have had at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. The tight travel restriction comes into effect as the crisis escalates in NSW with soaring new daily infection numbers. Two cases were detected in hotel quarantine in Queensland.
