Backup Everything and Do it Now
In case something goes wrong during the update process when iOS 15 arrives, it’s best to take the time out and backup everything to either iTunes, Finder or iCloud ahead of time.
In order to backup to iCloud, simply connect your iPhone or iPad to a power outlet, connect to Wi-Fi then navigate to Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Backup and then tap on Back Up Now.
If you do not have enough space on iCloud for a complete device backup then you can create a local backup onto your computer using Finder or iTunes. Simply connect your device using a Lightning or a USB-C cable to your computer, launch iTunes or Finder, select your device from the left hand corner, and then choose to backup everything ‘To This Computer’ in the backup section. You may choose to encrypt the backup if you like.
Free up Some Space (Lots of it)
It is a good idea to free up at least 8GB or more space on your device. If you can’t, then you might want to delete some apps which you aren’t using. Maybe give up some memes. You can check your free space by going to Settings > General > iPhone / iPad Storage. You will also find suggestions here what content is using up space the most.
Make Sure You are Connected to Wi-Fi and at Home
Do not attempt to install the update while you are out and about. Just take a deep breath, make sure you are home and connected to your own Wi-Fi network before installing the update. There is a chance that you might run into problems if you have are connected to a shoddy wireless network. Regardless of how bad it is, home Wi-Fi is usually the best option since you have more control over how it works.
Keep a Charger with You Just in Case
Although having 50% or more battery life remaining is more than enough to install an update. But I will suggest keeping your device plugged into a power source while you download and install the update. This way everything goes through as smoothly as possible.
Some Features Might Not be Available on Release Day
It has become obvious at this point that some iOS and iPadOS features might not be available on release day. This includes SharePlay and the final version of iCloud Private Relay. It also seems as if Universal Clipboard might not make the cut on launch either. If these are features you wanted to try out on day one, it is best to dial down your hopes a little as they will be available in an update at a later date.
Some Other Things to Know
Initial releases of big software updates are not exactly bug free. The most common issue we end up facing is bad battery life. If that is a huge concern for you then it is a good idea to hold back from the update for a while and wait what the community has to report back on in terms of battery life. If you get a green light then go ahead with the update, or, you can simply wait for iOS 15.0.1 to arrive with fixes and enhancements. It is entirely your call.
Wait it Out
If you are all set, then you can wait until the final software arrives in a few weeks time. Just make sure you have done the backup part so that everything is safe and secure on update day.
