It comes as another childcare centre, the Clarendon Street Community Childcare Centre in Cranbourne, was added as a Tier 1 exposure site, taking the number of Tier 1 childcare centres in Dandenong and Casey to five. The site was listed late on Saturday night after a positive case was present there from 6.30am – 1pm on Monday September 27.“Across the south east we’re continuing to see a growth in cases,” Victorian Covid Commander Jeroen Weimar said in Sunday’s press conference. He said that of Sunday’s 1220 cases, 236 had been recorded in Keysborough, Frankston and Pakenham.The most recent statistics show that cases in Casey, Greater Dandenong and Frankston have more than doubled in a week.Casey had 508 active cases on Sunday, October 3 compared to 233 the previous Sunday; Greater Dandenong had 262 cases compared to 133; while Frankston’s cases were up to 79 from 29.Mr Weimar said that the majority of new cases across Victoria were people aged under 40, a demographic that accounted for 70 per cent of new cases on Sunday. “We’re talking about young people and largely unvaccinated young people,” he said. Dandenong and Casey have a significantly higher proportion of people in the under 40 demographic: 57 and 59 per cent respectively, compared to the state average of 53 per cent.The rate of vaccination in both Dandenong and Casey continues to lag behind the state average. In Dandenong 36 per cent of residents are fully vaccinated while in Casey 37 per cent are fully vaxxed, compared to the Victorian average of 52 per cent.
