The maximum security officer, a family man, was to lose his job soon under vaccination mandates requiring those who work in the corrections system to be jabbed.Colleagues at the jail, at Truganina in Melbourne’s west, have been told the news of his death today.The prison would not have been legally allowed to employ him after next month.A spokesman for Port Phillip’s operator, G4S Australia and New Zealand, declined to comment.The Corrections Victoria website says there are five active Covid cases among prison staff.Three are at Port Phillip Prison, one is at the Ravenhall Correctional Centre and another is from the Metropolitan Remand Centre.The Herald Sun understands there has been a high level of acceptance of vaccinations among those who work in jails.Authorities have been desperate to prevent any spread of Covid within the prison system.The most recent available figures put the full vaccination rate among inmates at 66 per cent.
