One traumatised Australian living in the US described California as “hell” after Kalifatidis told her Instagram followers she felt “unsafe” while on holiday in Los Angeles with fiance Michael Brunelli. It come just days after the head of the Los Angles Police Department’s union issued an extraordinary warning to tourists to stay away from Los Angeles due to soaring levels of violent crime. “My message to anyone thinking about coming to Los Angeles, especially during the holiday season, is don’t,” Jamie McBride, the head of the LA Police Protective League, the union representing LAPD officers, said in a television interview.
“We can’t guarantee your safety. It is really, really out of control. I said it to people before, it’s like that movie Purge, you know, instead of 24 hours to commit your crime, these people have 365 days to commit whatever they want,” McBride said.Reality star Kalifatidis’ post sparked a flurry of support from Aussies living in the US, with several saying they felt scared and couldn’t wait to get back to Australia. One Australian told how they had been robbed at gunpoint on LA’s world-famous Melrose Avenue, lauded for its boutiques and trendy restaurants. “I was there for six weeks but left two weeks ago,” the MAFS fan said. “Got held up at gunpoint on Melrose at 2pm and stole my Rolex. So scary — I used to love LA too but not anymore.”Another MAFS fan told of their devstation over LA’s “out of control” homelessness crisis. “Girl, I moved from Australia to Chicago in August … I’m so scared here. I spent a night in LA when I arrived and called my partner crying as I was so devastated by the homelessness and how out of control it has come. I mean, I love my man and am not going to leave but I miss Australia so much.” An Aussie now living in LA after moving from Brisbane revealed she had “cried every day since arriving”. “Cannot wait to go back to Australia! The US is not the same. It’s so sad,” she wrote. Another expat went even further, branding the US “disgusting”. “I’m an Aussie living in the US and totally agree — America is just the most disgusting place… NYC is actually nowhere near as scary as Los Angeles/San Francisco, especially if you stay in the right neighbourhoods… get the hell out of California, it’s hell.”
