The best pop culture moments of 2021

OSTN Staff

This past year brought more lockdowns, border closures, and uncertainty. However, there were still some shining lights that saved the entire year from getting in the bin. As a good reminder to make the most of the good times in 2022 — even when they’re not happening to you, personally — here are my favourite (good vibes only) moments from the year that was.JAN: Bernie Sanders’ mittens went viral. Not a lot of good things came out of the USA this year, but at least we have this. Bernie Sanders went viral for looking completely unbothered at the inauguration of Joe Biden. Not two minutes later, this man and his cosy-looking mittens were all over the internet.JAN: JoJo Siwa officially came out. When JoJo Siwa first became a well-known name, I did not understand it. At all. I am now obsessed with her, and it all started with the cutest of TikToks to officially come out to her fans. This video, and the ones that followed, were so full of joy, sincerity and strength that I’ve been following her ever since.FEB: ‘Gorilla Glue Girl’ became a household name.I feel a little bit bad laughing at her pain, but the very good content that came out of the ‘Gorilla Glue girl’ fiasco was too good not to mention.Tessica Brown went viral after posting a video to TikTok admitting she’d used Gorilla Glue adhesive spray to keep her hair slicked down. It was just as bad an idea as most of us would have assumed, and in the end (a month later) only surgery could remove the glue.MAR: Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion melted minds.Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion have performed an iconic version of WAP at the 2021 Grammys. While rappers Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion release WAP in 2020, they once again had conservatives clutching their pearls after performing the song live at the 2021 Grammys. The performance was HOT, end of story. I would have loved to have seen women confident in their sexualities and owning it on stage, rather than the “sexy for the man, and only for the man” mentality that I grew up with. Also I just really want to jump on that giant bed?MAR: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spilt the royal tea.I truly have never cared about the Royal family, but the when tea as hot that which came to light in the Oprah / Prince Harry / Meghan Markle interview spills, you can’t help but pay attention. It’s like the most delicious soap opera. Not to mention, the memes were very good.MAR: That cargo ship Vs the Seuz Canal. When one drives a very large cargo ship, one should ensure that it will fit into a very busy canal before entering. This is the lesson we learned when the Ever Given got its sweet little hiney stuck in the Seuz Canal for days. Not only did this incident serve as a reminder that no matter how bad your day was, you could always be the captain who turned the wheel too hard and blocked international trade. Also it made for the best meme format.SEPT Squid Game destroyed us all.I’ll be honest, I still haven’t watched this Korean sensation — to be honest, I basically relied on soothing 90s comedies to survive lockdown. However, the fact I’ve never seen it yet can easily pick out scenes and references from it, shows just how much it was in mainstream culture.SEPT: Kim K dressed in a giant black stocking. The Met Gala was back on this year, and no one got the meme mill going quite like Kim Kardashian. She entered the gala dressed (literally) head to toe in a black outfit that honestly just looked like she’d shimmied into a giant stocking.OCT: Bad art friend made us question everything. In 2021, thanks to rather hefty article in the New York Times, we discovered that Dawn Dorland donated a kidney and shared the experience with her online writing group. Next minute, she was accusing fellow group member, Sonya Larson, of stealing her personal experience for a short story. This sparked a wider cultural debate around whether Larson’s story was plagiarism, or just good story telling.NOV: We all got mad at Jake Gyllenhaal. When Taylor Swift released Red (Taylor’s version), we collectively rallied behind her to hate on Jake Gyllenhaal and his awful behaviour, as set out in Swift’s extended cut of All Too Well. I mean honestly, Jake, at least give her red scarf back.NOV: Pete Davidson started dating Kim K.Speaking of the Kardashians — in a move that absolutely nobody saw coming, Pete Davidson and Kim Kardashian officially confirmed they were dating after being papped on a rollercoaster on Long Island. Since then the rumour mill was alive with “sources” claiming everything from it being a publicity stunt, to Kanye being super jealous and wanting Kim back. Honestly, who knows, but I still can’t see it lasting into 2022.NOV: Britney was finally free.Britney Spears was my very first tape deck (that was kids songs and nursery rhymes). So when I tell you my heart was full of joy for her when she was finally freed from her conservatorship, I mean I played Britney on repeat for days.DEC: And just like that … we had more Sex & The CityI don’t care how lame it makes me, I definitely signed up to Binge just so I could tune into And Just Like That every week. I’m not sorry about, even though I can’t understand why Carrie didn’t call a bloody ambulance. Although thanks to recent revelations about Chris Noth, I’m glad she didn’t.That’s it, that’s my list. If anything else happened this year, I don’t even want to hear about it.
