It’s usually a sea of RM Williams, loafers, boat shoes and Birkenstocks this time of year with the pub’s owners hosting one of the busiest beer gardens in the country. It’s unknown how many were affected but it’s understood the pub was packed. DANIHER TRIBUTE MATCH Melbourne and Essendon are hard at work to organise a match dedicated to Neale Daniher. The round three clash between the rivals on April 1 will be under lights at the MCG.Daniher mentor and friend Kevin Sheedy tells Sheahan Ink talks are underway between both club’s boards and top administrators. “It’s been mentioned in dispatches between a few people at the club but Covid has put everything behind so the deal is we’ll try and get it.” Daniher has become a beacon of light for the MND community raising millions of dollars as well as awareness for a crippling condition Daniher himself suffers from. “We’re trying to get everything right, we’re trying to do the best to get the best crowds,” Sheedy said.Daniher, 60, played 82 games for the Bombers between 1979 and 1990, and he coached Melbourne for 228 games over 10 seasons and led the Demons to the 2000 grand final, which they lost ironically to Essendon. Daniher was awarded an Order of Australia last year for his work on fighting MND. SUMMER LOVIN’Greater Western Sydney big man Lachie Keeffe finished 2021 in a much better place, proposing to long-time partner Emma on Christmas Day. Keeffe injured his ACL during the team’s match against Essendon early last season and is now back running. The former Collingwood player proposed to Emma while on holiday in Tasmania. Another former Magpie turned Adelaide Crow, Paul Seedsman married his girlfriend last week at a winery in the Adelaide Hills.REHAB ALL THE RAGE Two legendary sporting identities have had an interesting Christmas period. One spent time in a Geelong rehabilitation centre for alcoholism while the other was caught by the cops drink driving in his own apartment building. The first has been battling alcohol addiction for years, alienating his family and friends. He has tried many times to dry out and has had success in the past but can’t shake his battle with the bottle. The second had been on the drink when he decided to hop in his car in his building’s carpark only to fall asleep. Concerned residents phoned the police who arrived to find the charismatic sportsperson asleep at the wheel. He was allegedly subsequently found to be over .05. Another VFL footballer entered rehab not so long ago after friends in the football world passed the hat around to help with costs for the 14 day stay. But the well-known big man only managed a few days inside in an attempt to curb his alcohol intake, much to the disappointment of his friends.
