- Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger were censured by the RNC on Friday.
- Trump praised the move, congratulating the RNC and its chair, Ronna McDaniel.
- Some GOP lawmakers, including Sens. Mitt Romney and Bill Cassidy, have blasted the censure.
Former President Donald Trump congratulated the Republican National Committee for voting to censure GOP Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger over their involvement on the January 6 committee.
“Congratulations to the Republican National Committee (RNC) and its Chairwoman, Ronna McDaniel, on their great ruling in censuring Liz Cheney and Cryin’ Adam Kinzinger, two horrible RINOs who put themselves ahead of our Country,” Trump said in a statement on Saturday.
The RNC voted to censure the lawmakers for serving on the House select committee investigating the Capitol riot. Cheney and Kinzinger are the only two Republicans on the committee. They are also two of the 10 Republicans who voted in favor of Trump’s second impeachment after the insurrection.
Ahead of the censure vote, Cheney slammed GOP leadership and said in a tweet: “I do not recognize those in my party who have abandoned the Constitution to embrace Donald Trump. History will be their judge.”
Kinzinger also defended his work on the committee and criticized the GOP over “conspiracies and toxic tribalism.”
Some Republican lawmakers, including Sens. Mitt Romney and Bill Cassidy, have blasted the censure.
“Shame falls on a party that would censure persons of conscience, who seek truth in the face of vitriol,” Romney said on Twitter.
