The Weekend Sunrise host made world headlined for not listening to the superstar’s latest album before he flew to London in November last year for an Australian-exclusive interview. The network was unable to air the interview and Doran was then reportedly suspended for two weeks, but he took more time off screen to focus on his mental health.Doran was back reporting on Sunrise on Tuesday as part of the show’s special coverage of the devastating Queensland and NSW floods.Sunrise shared videos of his coverage to social media.During one cross, the reporter climbed off a boat and across a roof to interview a Brisbane flood victim who was standing on her balcony.Doran appeared in good spirits on screen, laughing and cracking jokes with the interviewee. In late November after time off screen, which Doran told The Australian wasn’t because he was “formally” suspended, Doran apologised on air for insulting the singer and her fans.He said he made the “terrible mistake” of assuming he was not given a preview of the album and had missed the email from Adele’s label, Sony, with the link to it.“This story has sparked – from around the world, a torrent of abuse and mockery – and if I’m being honest with you, the bulk of this savaging I deserve and totally own,” Doran said.He also shut down reports that Adele had walked out of the interview after realising he hadn’t listened to her new album.“To Adele, I say, I’d never knowingly have disrespected you by deliberately not listening to your work, I am so sorry,” he added.“I also apologise to Adele’s Australian fans, and to you, our viewers, who – through my error – have been denied this interview and the insight into her character.”Sony denied Channel 7 rights to air the interview that was part of a package the network reportedly brokered which also included broadcast rights to Oprah Winfrey’s One Night Only interview and concert.Speaking to news.com.au at the time, Seven West Media chief executive James Warburton said it was “obviously disappointing” the interview never made it to air, but they needed to move on.“Matt’s a pro, he’ll get on with his job,” he said of Doran. In February, The Sunday Telegraph reported Doran had checked into a mental health rehabilitation facility following the pressure of looking after his ill mother and the controversy surrounding the Adele interview.
