Exclusive new data obtained by the Herald Sun has revealed that Victorian health services have delivered more vaccines than any other Australian state or territory, with almost six million jabs administered through state-run centres since the rollout began. Sandown Racecourse in Springvale was the most popular place to get vaccinated, with 468,000 doses delivered between May 19 last year and February 28 this year. The Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne’s CBD and Sunshine Hospital in the west rounded out the top three busiest vaccination hubs, with the sites delivering 397,000 and 342,000 jabs, respectively. Victoria’s first state-run vaccination centres opened at Sunshine Hospital, Austin Hospital, Monash Medical Centre and at the University Hospital in Geelong in February last year, while high-volume vaccination centres at the Royal Exhibition Building and Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on March 22. The Sandown Racecourse – the busiest site across the state – opened on May 19. Jab hub listCovid-19 commander Jeroen Weimar said the high volume sites weren’t part of the initial blueprints. “But we quickly recognised the need for a network of big, central and memorable locations that are easily accessible,” he said. Many of the vaccination centres were delivered in partnership with community health services, such as Broadmeadows Town Hall, which delivered 60,000 vaccines. In total, 166 vaccine hubs have operated, with more than 1,322 community organisations hosting pop-up sites.“Our network of smaller, more-targeted sites at schools, community centres and religious venues also had a huge impact and made the vaccination experience feel more welcoming to those who may have had concerns,” Mr Weimar added. Health Minister Martin Foley said the sites “all contributed to making Victoria one of the most vaccinated places in the world”.As of March 1, 5,972,174 doses have been delivered through Victoria’s state-run centres.
