Budget smashed by MAFS’ final vows

Despite dishing out $8.6 billion in cash handouts and fuel excise cuts, the final vows episode of MAFS trounced the Treasurer. Even Channel 7’s Home And Away was more popular than the Treasurer’s budget night speech at 7.30pm which came in as the 12th most watched program.Overnight ratings have confirmed that most viewers preferred to get their budget news online, with the number of families tuning into the Treasurer’s speech on the national broadcaster coming in at 420,000 combined viewers.The ABC’s special budget coverage after the speech saw numbers plunge even further. It was the 17th most watched program with 292,000 viewers.Married At First Sight won the night with a combined 1,008,000 viewers across the five city metro regions in Australia. By comparison, the budget coverage of the Treasurer’s speech on the ABC scored 420,000 viewers, slightly less than Channel 10’s The Dog House, featuring the heartwarming stories of disowned and neglected dogs. Each episode “showcases the people, from all walks of life, who come to Animal Welfare League NSW in search of the pawfect dog to complete their family”.The Project at 7pm on Channel 10 secured 403,000 viewers on budget night, coming in as the 13th most watched program.However, Channel 7 and Channel 9’s 6pm news that featured budget coverage in a preview of the main event came in at the second, third, fourth and fifth most watched programs. Across Australia, Channel 7’s 6pm news attracted 954,000 combined viewers while the news at 6.30pm secured 908,0000 viewers.Channel 9 came in at third and fourth spots with 851,000 viewers at 6.30pm.In a pre-budget report, those channels reported that the Morrison government planned to deliver a $1500 tax cut to 10 million working Australians and a petrol excise cut.The ABC’s 7pm news was the 7th most watched program followed by The Chase on Channel 7.
