AFLW stars turn on glamour for W Awards

The league’s top women footballers swapped their jumpers and shorts for glittering gowns and chic pant suits at the coral carpet ahead of Saturday’s grand final between Melbourne and Adelaide.Big names stepping out included Darcy Vescio, Katie Brennan, Chloe Molloy, Maddie Prespakis, Emma Kearney, Ellie Blackburn, Monique Conti, Kaitlyn Ashmore, Emily Bates and Hannah Priest. Melbourne players gathered at Marvel Stadium, while Adelaide players gathered at Adelaide Oval under AFL protocols to minimise risk ahead of the decider.Richmond star Conti stepped out with her partner of a year, Melbourne United basketballer Davo Hickey.“I’m having a bit of a break and then going into basketball for the winter,” Conti said. “I’m keen to get started into footy very soon. The more footy the better.”Brisbane players Jesse Wardlaw and Zimmorlei Farquharson made a statement in blazers, sunglasses and bralettes.“We styled and paid for it ourselves, we knew we wanted to wear suits and match a little bit,” Wardlaw said.”We’re trying to bring a bit of swagger to the awards.”Singer and footy fan G Flip flew back from LA two days ago and couldn’t wait to join the players. “I sang last year and this time I’m just invited me for the good times,” she said. “I’m singing at the Grand Prix and then another festival after that.“This is my favourite sport so it’s good timing.“I love the Collingwood Football Club, love the whole squad and the team. I’ve got ‘Go pies’ tattooed on my arm and even though I’m living overseas I have my AFL pass online and watch at all hours.“The after party was at my house last year. A few champagnes after and you never know.”The night was hosted by Fox Footy’s Sarah Jones and Brihony Dawson, featuring the All-Australian team announcement, as well as the rising star, leading goalkicker, mark and goal of the year, and the much anticipated best and fairest award.
