The Batman sequel has been confirmed and Pattinson and director Matt Reeves will both be returning. Warner Bros made the announcement today during CinemaCon.The Batman, released in March, has become one of the biggest box office successes in the pandemic era, nabbing $US760 million around the world. It was also watched by 4 million American households when it dropped on streaming service HBO Max.The Batman has taken close to $40 million at the Australian box office.Starring Pattinson as a younger version of the iconic superhero character, Reeves’ dark and grimy take on Gotham pitted Batman against Paul Dano’s Riddler. The film also featured Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Penguin and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone. The three-hour long movie structures the narrative as a detective story, and it often plays like a David Fincher film.Pattinson revealed in a GQ interview he was surprised at first by Reeves’ approach. He said: “I watched a rough cut of the movie by myself and the first shot is so jarring from any other Batman movie that it’s just kind of a totally different pace. “It was what Matt was saying from the first meeting I had with him: ‘I want to do a ’70s noir detective story, like The Conversation.’ And I kind of assumed that meant the mood board or something, the look of it. But from the first shot, it’s, ‘Oh, this actually is a detective story’. And I feel like an idiot, because I didn’t even know that Batman was ‘the world’s greatest detective’. “I hadn’t heard that in my life before — but it really plays. Just ’cause there’s a lot of stuff where he’s in amongst the cops. Normally, when you see Batman he arrives and beats people up. But he’s having conversations, and there are emotional scenes between them, which I don’t think have been in any of the other movies.”The mid-credits scene teased a future team-up between Riddler and Joker (Barry Keoghan), which would be fertile ground for a sequel. There is also a Penguin spin-off series being developed for HBO Max with Farrell set to reprise his role. Reeves has also flagged he was working on another spin-off series based around Arkham Asylum. The Batman movies and series are supposed to sit in a separate cinematic universe to the other DC properties such as Shazam, Justice League and Aquaman. The Batman was originally envisioned as being part of the DCEU and was announced as part of Ben Affleck’s deal when he signed up for the role. Affleck was to direct, write and star in the movie but later dropped out.Reeves was hired as the replacement and re-cast the character as someone younger. Pattinson was confirmed in 2019 after he won the part over Nicholas Hoult.
