Industry Support and Trade Minister Martin Pakula will on Saturday reveal United Airlines will bring back three flights a week along the popular corridor after support from the government.Flights will start in June and ramp up to a daily service by December, with the state expecting a $54 million boost to the economy and 570 jobs.It comes as major airlines are returning to Melbourne, with Qantas expanding services from Los Angeles and opening a new route from Dallas Fort Worth.“We’re backing more direct international flights to Melbourne because we know the critical role they play in supporting Victorian businesses and creating jobs,” Mr Pakula said.“Having more direct flights to Victoria means it is even easier for visitors to come here and enjoy everything we are famous for – whether that’s our major sporting events, food scene or cultural institutions.”Melbourne Airport’s chief of aviation Lorie Argus said they were excited to welcome the airline back.“This is a huge vote of confidence in Melbourne because United’s global footprint means it has a wide choice of potential cities to serve, and our proposition clearly stood out.”United Airlines senior vice president of international network and alliances, Patrick Quayle, said the airline was committed to Australia.“We are thrilled to resume our San Francisco to Melbourne service and see a bright future ahead for United, for Melbourne and for US-Australia travel.”
