Kyrgios posted the video on his Instagram, saying he wanted to test the strength of the shark. While managing to pull it some way into the shallows, the thrashing shark proves stronger and more determined than Kyrgios and manages to struggle away, after which another man grabs the rope to stop it swimming off. Many Instagram followers were shocked and appalled by the footage, making mention of the fact Kyrgios was supposedly vegan and an animal lover. One person commented “vegan but torturing sharks? Wow”, while another said “leave the shark alone, sh-t on the course, same on life. Come on bro”. “Confused, thought you were vegan” and “thought he was vegan, why is he doing this to the shark,” commented others. It was announced earlier this year Kyrgios, a vegan, had partnered with prominent plant-based beef substitute company Beyond Meat.He said at the time was passionate about animal welfare and did not eat meat or dairy because he didn’t believe in eating animals. After seeing the footage of animals suffering in Australia’s bushfires Kyrgios said his decision to go vegan had been reinforced, saying “I can’t comprehend eating meat”.Kyrgios also posted footage on Instagram of himself feeding the endangered Bahamas Exuma rock iguanas with a morsel on the end of a long stick and of his bikini-clad girlfriend Costeen Hatzi patting the famous Bahamas swimming pigs – a major but controversial tourist attraction – while he waded with them in the crystal clear waters.“Exuma was a vibe,” Kyrgios posted.Kyrgios returned serve to those slamming his shark show, in capital letters, saying: “There were no hooks involved, the shark bites on baits attached to the rope, I was wanting to see the strength of the shark.”Hatzi also jumped on to comment the action took place in a shark sanctuary, “where they take care of the sharks and feed them (and) no animals were hurt”.Exuma is a district of the Bahamas, consisting of over 365 islands, also called cays. Although Kyrgios and Hatzi had a nightmare trip to the Bahamas, including needing to sleep on the floor in Toronto’s airport, the loved-up pair were clearly enjoying themselves and relaxing after arrival.Kyrgios owns a house in the tropical paradise and lists his official residence on the ATP Tour in the tax haven.Although Kyrgios racked up $26,000 in fines from his behaviour at Wimbledon, he won $A1.8m for his two-weeks of work.Model Costeen, who has a following of about 125,000, wrote: “A well deserved holiday.”
