McKeon has blitzed the field at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and was one of the most decorated athletes at the Tokyo Olympics, winning four gold medals.Curry, who was eliminated from Ten’s The Masked Singer on Monday, said: “I did have a little chuckle when I saw Emma McKeon on the front page of Woman’s Day (magazine) and I thought, ‘If only you knew what’s coming, because I’ve been through it all.”Asked “what’s coming,” Curry replied: “Oh, everything. Whatever they can manufacture, they will throw at the person that’s the flavour of the moment. “You’ve got to have big shoulders, and it’s different these days in the world of social media, which we didn’t have back in my day.“We were kind of protected. But, back in the day we had no right of response. We could never come out and say, ‘Hang on a minute that’s not true, whereas these days, you can. “I just hope they’re respectful to all the athletes because we don’t ask to be role models. We just do what we do, which is swim from one end to the other as fast as we can.”Curry said she felt sorry for Kyle Chalmers, who made headlines after his ex, McKeon, found new love with pop star turned swimmer Cody Simpson.Chalmers and Simpson competed in the pool at Birmingham.“It’s media driven drama, but what most people don’t understand it does affect the swimmers,” Curry said. “Poor old Kyle Chalmers says he went from poster boy to villain, and it’s just not the case.” Curry sang Tones And I’s hit Cloudy Day on The Masked Singer disguised as a caterpillar. The song, which speaks of holding on to memories, and finding light amid the gloom, had special meaning for Curry. She is still mourning the loss of her daughter, Jaimi, who passed away in 2020 after a long illness.“You have days when you’re down, and you don’t feel great, but you’ve got to find the sun,” Curry said “On a cloudy day, the sun pops through every now and then, and there’s the enjoyment, the soul of who you are.” Curry said she went on the show to cheer herself up. Asked is she is OK, Curry answered: “I still feel ordinary. You change as a person. Like the show, when you’re in grief, you’re wearing a mask every day. You wear this mask of strength and happiness, but you’re not underneath, “But singing is good for the soul. It’s given me enjoyment and some light.”
