Kane Cornes has hit back at North Melbourne president Sonja Hood, saying she’s been on “the longest victory lap” over the coup of appointing coach Alastair Clarkson.Hood took exception to Cornes labelling her uninspiring, admitting she didn’t go on SEN radio to reveal the signing because of the co-host’s presence.“David King, I think, is never going to forgive me for not coming in and announcing it on SEN yesterday morning,’’ she said on Saturday, “but I did say to him if his co-host hadn’t been so keen on describing me as uninspiring I might have popped by.”Cornes returned fire and delivered a reality check on Sunday.“You’d be forgiven for thinking that North Melbourne had won the premiership,’’ he said. “It’s incredible, really. And congratulations to her, but while she was on one of the longest victory laps you’ve ever seen, North Melbourne were getting smashed by a bottom six side by 67 points at Marvel yesterday. Well done, that’s the coach you needed to get, but don’t feel like this is going to be the messiah moment for the North Melbourne Football Club because they’re an absolute mess.”He added on The Sunday Footy Show: “Do you agree they’ve won two games at a percentage of 60 and they’ve been one of the worst teams in the competition”.So far this season Cornes has traded words with Jack Ginnivan, Adam Simpson, Wayne Carey and Jaidyn Stephenson.Brown boosting for GaleCollingwood president Jeff Browne was recently seen sharing a coffee with Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale in an upmarket Toorak cafe. And the Pies boss was forthcoming when quizzed about the meeting.“I want him to be the next AFL CEO,’’ Browne told Time On.“I think it needs to be someone who has worked in club land. You need that experience.”Incumbent CEO Gillon McLachlan is stepping down at season’s end.Browne, the ex-AFL lawyer, says he also has the utmost respect for Andrew Dillon who is considered the frontrunner to get the top job. Shaq hits MelbourneThe arrival of basketball great Shaquille O’Neal to Melbourne this week has sports fans excited. The popular athlete hits town on Wednesday and Fox Footy host Mark Howard is set to interview O’Neal for Main Event’s special on Thursday night. The Collingwood great injured his pectoral muscle while doing weights in the gym. “I thought someone had stabbed me in my lefty and it just went go,’’ Buckley said on Fox Footy’s Best On Ground program.“It’s fully ruptured and I have to go in on Monday to get it reconnected. I’ll be winged for about a month, in a sling for two to four weeks. It was bloody painful.”Jack gets a catMuch-maligned Collingwood star Jack Ginnivan may have a new furry companion this week.Ahead of the game on Sunday he posted a cat sitting on the roof of his car.“Bruh is this shit good or bad luck,’’’ he captioned the picture.Sure enough the goalsneak found out by 6pm that it was indeed good luck after the Magpies’ comeback win over Carlton by a point.Almost an hour after the game he posted a picture of himself in the rooms: “I’m buying a f—ing cat.”Kiss of death for CarltonThere was plenty of star power at the MCG on Sunday. It started with KISS legend Gene Simmons presenting the match ball before NBA basketballer Jamal Murray strolled the field at halftime, mixing it with the little leaguers and scoring a goal. He was with his ex-teammate, Melbourne United’s Isaac Humphries. “Love it, learn something new every day,’’ Murray said.By game’s end it emerged the stands featured the likes of Pies great Dane Swan, who was having none of being humble in victory, NBL owner Larry Kestelman, VRC chairman Neil Wilson and Grand Prix CEO Andrew Westacott, a Western Bulldogs fan, who was very pleased with the day’s result. Ex-Blue Brendan Fevola said it was nightmares were made of.“On the way there I said to the girls the worst possible outcome is if Collingwood win, finish top four, they knock us out of the finals and they win by a point,’’ he said on his FOX FM breakfast show on Monday. “People crying everywhere, it was so grim.”
