Makeup Artists Say This Is *the* Lipstick Shade to Wear This Fall

I consider fall the perfect time to dive into my arsenal of beauty products and change up my makeup routine. Normally, I tend to go for a more natural look, but once September hits, I’m all about rich shades of brown, gold, and best of all, burgundy. A particular makeup item I like to wear in this hue is lipstick because it truly never goes out of style. Whether you like a deeper berry shade of burgundy or one reminiscent of your favorite red wine, I can guarantee there’s a shade out there for you just waiting to be worn. It’s so versatile, looks great on every skin tone, and feels just right as the weather starts to cool off. Even if you’re skeptical to try it, trust me on this. I asked makeup artist and founder of her own self-titled cosmetics company, Alexa Persico, and she totally agrees. For a few of Persico’s favorite shades that range from drugstore to high-end, keep scrolling. A few of my own go-to’s are below, too.

“This is an opaque maroon shade that isn’t too brown or too purple. It dries down to a comfy matte finish and looks great on all skin tones!”—Persico

“This shade is a vampy purple with hints of brown. This color has my approval for all complexions, especially those with neutral undertones.”—Persico

“Not only is this the perfect shade of burgundy, but this formula will last you all day and night (seriously). This color is a deep, true burgundy with a matte finish that is a similar shade to your favorite bottle of Merlot—hence the name Fine Like Wine—it goes on smooth, doesn’t bleed, and won’t rub off on your wine glass.”—Persico

Persico also loves Bobbi Brown lipsticks. Her OG favorite is the Rich Lip Color in Crimson, which is unfortunately sold out. But this rich, almost plum shade, is equally as good from the brand.

You can’t beat Nyx formulas—they’re affordable and seriously high quality. I love this satiny smooth lipstick in the shade Opinionated. It’s definitely a lighter burgundy (almost red), but it’s so great for a special occasion.

Although this is a matte lipstick, the formula is creamy and infused with oil to give it a weightless, cushiony feel. The deep-wine shade makes the formula all the better.

Infused with cotton-seed oil, raspberry-seed oil, and vitamin E, this mousse-textured formula helps your lips maintain hydration throughout the day. Not to mention this gorgeous shade of deep berry it comes in.

Chanel lipsticks are classic for a reason. This delicious shade of berry is absolutely gorgeous and the formula is both incredibly hydrating and long-lasting.

If Chanel isn’t quite in your budget, Revlon offers a velvety matte formula for less than half the price in this stunning shade of burgundy.

Glossier’s Ultralip has a balmy texture that’s enriched with four molecular weights of hyaluronic acid to help your lips attract and hold moisture. It also has a bit of a glossy finish if you’re into that. Snag the shade Ember here for a more subtle burgundy lip.

This Nars formula is incredibly pigmented and glides so smoothly onto the lips. I especially love the shade Charlotte—it’s a lovely deep raspberry that never goes out of style.

If you love Burt’s Bees lip balm, you’ll love the brand’s hydrating lipstick even more. It provides eight-hour moisture with ingredients like beeswax, moringa oil, raspberry seed oil, and vitamin E. This luscious burgundy shade called Russet River is one of my favorites.
