To give you an idea of what the behind-the-scenes of attending fashion week for most editors lookl like, imagine piles and piles of clothes strewn across your floor. With tiny NYC apartments and only a few minutes at home a day as we power walk from show to show, it’s not easy to stay organized. I remember laughing as one of my coworkers told me she slept in a pile of clothes the night after a full day of shows—she wasn’t exaggerating. We call in a lot of new outfits to wear during fashion week with the intention of showcasing the latest trends and wearing items that can be shopped by our readers now.
Most of us end up wearing at least two looks per day with the obligatory outfit change for the evening shows and after parties that require quite a bit of glitz and glam. If my calculations are correct, that totals 56+ outfits in just one week for my team of fashion editors. Despite the multitude of outfit changes, I proposed that the editors narrow it down to just one look that stood out to them during their fashion week. Below, you’ll find the 7 outfits that our editors loved the most—and you should copy.
“I’m a sucker for a good color story so you better believe that this candy-colored concoction ended up being my absolute favorite look of the week. I knew that this pink slip dress was ready to have a moment, I just wasn’t sure how I was going to style it. After trying edgier looks that included leather jackets or even testing out the dress on its own, I knew my next move would be to try a colorful sweater around my waist with a bold-colored bag. The results were fabulous.”
“For New York fashion week this season, I went for understated looks that centered around elevated staples. I like to invest in pieces I’ll wear again and again, rather than wear-it-once items, and Cate Holstein’s designs from Khaite are the very best. Here, I paired the brand’s knit top and jeans with my favorite vintage Prada heels, Celine glasses, and a bag from Savette—the rising designer everyone should have on their radar.”
“I’ve had this top from Alina Liu for quite some time now and I knew that the Sandy Liang show would be the perfect occasion for it. The brand had just released a collection of ballet flats, so I knew I had to pull out the sock-and-ballet-flats combo. A black silk skirt and handbag finished off the look, adding an edgier touch to the otherwise pretty and delicate top.”
“I never wear color, but fashion week is a time to test yourself when it comes to style and do something a little different (that you’re still comfortable in) so when I saw this red bodysuit from Haus Label on the brand’s founder Karina Trofimova, I knew I wanted to wear it. She was kind enough to let me borrow hers and from that point, I had to figure out how to wear it in a low-key way that would feel me despite its bold shade. I had ordered this white, ribbed skirt from Aya Muse on The RealReal a few weeks prior that I realized would pair perfectly since the skirt is open on the sides so a bodysuit is really the only thing to wear it with since underwear would show. From there, I added this stunning green Prada bag from the F/W 22 runway that I borrowed from Fashionphile for NYFW and my go-to By Far Satin Kim mules that are so broken in they’re more comfortable than any of my flats.”
“For fashion week I wanted to rock the perfect summer to fall transition looks. While the weather was still warm I was overdressing in summer hues and wanted to embrace neutral tones and great silhouettes. This Staud dress was so flattering, I loved the deep brown color and the square neckline. While this dress wasn’t exactly a bold choice, it was classic and all about the fit. I paired this dress with knee-high boots, cat eye sunglasses, and a bag also from Staud that has quickly become my new go-to handbag. I got so many compliments on this look, I can’t wait to style this dress all fall.”
“I like to think of attending New York Fashion Week as the perfect opportunity to dial things up a notch with my outfits and take a few sartorial risks that I might not otherwise have the courage to, like this delicate sheer dress I took for a spin this season. The embroidery reminded me of Miu Miu’s fall runway (particularly look 39), so I ran with that inspiration, styling it with a lingerie set from ethically-made label Find Me Now and my 2016-era Miu Miu ballet flats that I had the good foresight to hold onto all these years. Per the runway, I wore my flats with a pair of scrunched-up socks, a styling hack I hadn’t thought of before but one that gave them a brand new look.”
“When it comes to planning what to wear for fashion week, I similarly like the process of a slow-cook recipe—you throw in random ingredients over time to create the perfect concoction. That was very much the case with this outfit, as I never had an idea of what it would look like; rather, as I found individual pieces I loved, they came together. For example, after finding my silver slingback Givenchy heels in the sale section of TRR, and knew I wanted to save them for fashion week, but I wasn’t sure what to style them with until I got my cobalt blue blazer from The Giving Movement. I knew then I wanted to style them together, but it wasn’t until trying on various skirts and bags that I landed on pairing it with an archive pinstripe mini skirt from I.Am.Gia, and a crystal wallet bag from Kara. I wouldn’t have imagined pairing all these pieces together initially, but once I allowed myself to do a little off-recipe styling, I landed on a look that satisfied all my FW cravings.”
