Intel CEO Says Open To Manufacturer AMD Chips At Their Fabs, Aim To Build The Fastest CPUs, GPUs & Discrete GPUs In The World

In an interview with The Verge, Intel’s CEO, Pat Gelsinger, opened up about AMD & NVIDIA using their fabs to build world-class CPUs & GPUs.

Intel Is Open To Making World-Class CPUs & GPUs From Themselves & From Their Competitors (AMD & NVIDIA) At Their Own Fabs

During the interview, Pat said that during the inauguration of the Ohio Fab, he sat down with a number of CEOs from fabless companies and welcomed them and even offered to put their logo next to the fab where their new products were made. Not only that, but Pat Gelsinger also said that he will be thrilled to putting logos of their competitors (AMD & NVIDIA) at their fabs.

We had a number of CEOs from fabless companies at the Ohio site, and I said, “That fab module right there, I want to put your logo on it, and I want to say it was made here.”

You’re going to put an AMD logo on the side of an Intel fab?

Hey, if they choose to manufacture with us, I will be thrilled to do that. It’s the right thing at that level. These are large investments, and they are important for technology — they spawn technical communities.

But that’s not all, when talking about actual products to compete against NVIDIA and AMD, Pat said that his company is going to win in this space and make the fastest high-performance computers in the world. Chipzilla’s CEO went on to say that his company will be making the fastest CPUs, fastest GPUs, and also, the fastest discrete GPUs in the world. It is a pretty bold statement & he highlighted Meteor Lake to fulfill that promise.

The flip side of this is not just in Nvidia but AMD as well. It’s in the two major consoles and the Steam Deck — basically, it is in everything except the Switch. Ryzen chips per dollar seem to be offering more performance, and there is a lot of back and forth between Intel and AMD. Is that just a crown you can take? Or are you saying, “At the end of the day, we are going to do Foundry Services, get that Intel logo on the side of the fab in Ohio, and it’ll be fine”?

Hey, we are here to win in this space. Make no mistake about it. We are going to build the fastest high-performance computers in the world, the fastest GPUs in the world, and the fastest discrete GPUs in the world. We will have continuity to our integrated graphics as well. With increasingly integrated graphics in a heterogeneous architecture where you have multiple chiplets, just wait until you see Meteor Lake next year. These become quite interesting products, somewhat as Apple has shown. I see that continuity, and we are going to be very competitive

Intel Has Its Eyes Set on Everyone! Wants To Make Chips For Apple, NVIDIA, AMD & Qualcomm

Pat also says that it’s not just AMD and NVIDIA, he wants to show the world that Intel is capable as a world-class manufacturing company with bleeding edge fabs at its disposal that can fulfill their requirements. It is definitely going to take time but just recently, Intel’s Foundry Services was able to land a deal with MediaTek in a strategic partnership & will be manufacturing their edge-focused chips.

At the same time, I’m going to be the foundry for Nvidia. By the way, they need a more resilient supply chain. They need these technologies that we are working on. I don’t know how much of it will win, but I want to win their business. I want to win Qualcomm’s business, and I want to win Apple’s business. We want to be that provider of a choice. Again, we haven’t been in the foundry business. TSMC has perfected that business model for 30 years. They are good at it, and they have an ecosystem around them.

I’m not going to displace that, but to earn that business, we have to start coming in with unique perspectives, the best transistors with capacity corridors, and the PDKs (process design kits) and EDA (electric design automation) tools. The natural tailwinds will work for us. We are getting good momentum, and we are pretty excited about that. One by one, we are getting the media tech design win. The largest fabless company in Taiwan is committed to the US foundry company. That is pretty nice to see. Rick Tsai used to run TSMC, right? He is a very helpful customer. His commitment has helped teach us how to be a good foundry.

Intel’s Meteor Lake CPUs are planned for launch next year and the company is already in work on their fastest HPC GPU to date, the update to Ponte Vecchio known as Rialto Bridge. Intel’s CEO has also squashed rumors of ending their discrete Arc gaming lineup & the company is well on its way to developing the next GPUs known as Battlemage and Celestial.
