Samsung may not have significantly changed the design of the Galaxy S23 Ultra compared to its direct predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, but what matters are the improvements on the inside, such as video capture. These imaging improvements and more is what compelled famed British film director Sir Ridley Scott to shoot a small film titled ‘Behold’ on Samsung’s latest flagship.
Even with its imaging improvements, Sir Ridley Scott says the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s small size helps to maneuver in tight spaces to capture content a lot simpler
The difference between smartphones and video cameras used to direct cinema-quality films is day and night when talking about size. Director Sir Ridley Scott, who is well-known for releasing notable cinematic art pieces such as the 1979 Alien, 2012 Prometheus, and more, talks about the premise of the film, showing a dilapidated neighborhood where one man finds comfort after finding a horse.
When asked about his reaction to using the Galaxy S23 Ultra to shoot a short film, Sir Ridley Scott says that it was an interesting challenge because a compact device was going to take the place of those larger cameras. Cinematographer, Flavio Labiano, says that at first, he feared using the flagship, but as he grew accustomed to the settings, he was surprised at its versatility. He also said that its capabilities at capturing video greatly impressed him, along with its dynamic range.
Sir Ridley Scott said that one major advantage of using the Galaxy S23 Ultra was being able to film inside closed spaces with little obstruction. With larger cameras, one has to be more careful when moving around, but not with something as small as a smartphone. The premium handset still needs to be mounted on a stabilizer, with multiple units of the Galaxy S23 Ultra capturing different scenes, so the experience would have been more or less similar since the complementing equipment remained nearly the same.
‘Behold’ is a little less than four minutes long, and in the future, we will not be surprised if more and more short films are captured using high-end smartphones. Of course, those larger video cameras will still have their place, but let us know what you think about the clip above.
