NVIDIA has stated that support for RTX Video Super Resolution will be added through R530 drivers later this month.
NVIDIA R530 driver will see the update for RTX VSR AI enhancement software
CES 2023 offered companies like NVIDIA the ability to show off the greatest and latest in hardware and software for 2023 and beyond. One such unveiling by the company was the new RTX Super Video Resolution, to enhance video quality by upscaling through AI to increase picture resolution. As promised, the new feature will be available to RTX 30 and 40 series graphics cards soon, with support for older RTX 20 GPUs to be available later.
According to the recent NVIDIA RTX VSR changelog, Google’s Chrome 110 browser already supports the new technology but is not active until NVIDIA enables the technology through the next update.
Users can control the new NVIDIA VSR using the company’s proprietary Control Panel application. NVIDIA’s Control Panel will verify if the latest video technology supports the user’s graphics card.
Any users with compatible GPUs will receive the R530 driver branch, while users with RTX 20 series cards using the R520 drivers will wait longer for the new update.
The feature will be gated by the same disable_vp_super_resolution flag to ensure a minimum required nvidia driver version (currently targeted at version 530.xx). There will be no deviceid-based gating, the driver will decide this internally with only the latest generation of GPUs being supported initially.
Just like for the Intel counterpart, the feature has an impact on the GPU power consumption during video playback, so it will only be active when we are running on an external power supply and automatically disabled when we detect a switch to battery power.
There is no user-accessible toggle provided through Chromium, instead a new system-wide option will be added to the NVIDIA Control Panel application for users who want to manually turn the feature off.

So far, there are no cases of anyone activating the new update before the release. Still, it appears that it would not matter as the NVIDIA Control Panel assistance would not allow it initially. Lastly, the company does mention that the new NVIDIA VSR will only be capable of systems that use external power due to the extra boost needed to make the software work. Any systems utilizing a battery only will not be capable of using the VSR technology.
