Resident Evil 4 Remake Includes the Krauser Knife Fight, Which Inspired the New Parry System

When Capcom finally announced the long-rumored Resident Evil 4 remake, many wondered how faithful to the original game it would be. The answer seems to be “pretty darn faithful,” as even less popular sections like the Island are being recreated. That said, fans have continued to wonder about one very specific sequence – the knife fight with Jack Krauser. That battle, played out entirely through quick-time events in the original game, represented Resident Evil 4 at its most action-movie-inspired extreme, a tone most recent RE games don’t really go in for. So, does the knife fight make the cut?

According to a Game Informer interview with Resident Evil 4 remake directors Yasuhiro Ampo and Kazunori Kadoi, the Krauser knife fight is still in, but is now built around the game’s new parry system rather than quick-time events. In fact, it was the Krauser fight that inspired the parry system, as Capcom was looking for a way to make the fight more modern and reactive. According to Kadoi, parrying worked so well, it was eventually added to the rest of the game…

“Once the parry mechanic had been implemented, from that point when I played the original, I found myself wanting to parry in the original as well. That was when I felt things became really interesting.”

It will be interesting to see how the Krauser fight plays out now, and how some of the game’s other quick-time events have been adapted. Will you be parrying that boulder?

Per the GI article, you can also expect a greater focus on stealth in the new Resident Evil 4, with a new bolt weapon for silent kills and alternate routes through missions for those who prefer to take the sneaky route. Of course, if you prefer to shotgun and spin-kick your way through the hordes, that’s still an option too.

Resident Evil 4 arrives on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5 on March 24.
